Will capstar kill ticks?
Are you struggling to get rid of those pesky ticks? Looking for a solution that doesn’t involve slathering your fur baby in chemicals and hoping for the best? Enter Capstar. This little pill has been touted as a wonder drug, but does it really live up to the hype when it comes to killing ticks? Let’s dig in and find out!
What is Capstar and How Does It Work?
Before we can determine whether or not Capstar will kill ticks, we first need to understand what this drug actually is. At its core, Capstar (also known as nitenpyram) is an insecticide designed specifically for use on dogs and cats (cats are notoriously difficult creatures so hopefully this medication won’t turn them into pint-sized Terminators).
Capstar works by targeting the central nervous system of fleas (and potentially other pests). When ingested by your pet, nitenpyram causes an influx of chemicals within their tiny bodies which ultimately leads to involuntary muscle contractions resulting in seizures followed by death (there’s that friendly tone coming through again).
It’s important make sure that medications like these come from trusted sources; veterinarians are always happy yo discuss different product options with you.
So…Can It Kill Ticks Too?
Now that we know how Capstar works let’s move onto more pressing questions – does it work against our eight-legged friends too?
The answer unfortunately isn’t a simple yes or no. While cap star may provide some reprieve from tick infestations, there simply hasn’t been enough research done yet on its effectiveness against ticks exclusively (but seriously though researchers should focus on this given how dire the situation with Lyme disease seems sometimes – I mean they love studying weird things already why not interdimensional flea killers?)
Some studies have shown that administering large doses of Nitenpyram (in the 40mg/kg range) to rodents in a laboratory environment will kill ticks (don’t try this at home folks, it’s not as simple just giving your pet raw chunks of Capstar). However, most laboratory studies involve purified insecticides and controlled environments – it’s hard to recreate these conditions outside the lab.
So What Does Capstar Kill Then?
So what can we expect from administering Capstar on our pets? As mentioned earlier, it works exceptionally well against fleas. In fact, some estimates suggest that Nitenpyram is up to 90% effective within six hours of administration!
If you’re looking for something that targets other bugs like mites or lice – sorry! The drug is specifically formulated with fleas in mind (so let’s leave those hairy little creatures out of this)
How Safe is Capstar For My Pet?
Whenever we give our furry friends any new medication there is always risk involved no matter how small.
– A rare side effect associated with cap star use includes diarrhea and vomiting (not great)
– Some animals may also experience behavioral changes such as lethargy or hyperactivity while others display signs of nervousness including generalized tremors (also not great).
But here’s a fun fact: compared to other flea treatments available today however (especially sprays), cap star actually has way fewer reported incidents/ percentages of adverse effects so at least they won’t make them woozy/sleepy/bite-y/hyperactive/etc as long as everything goes according to plan! (Pheww!)
Just remember always adhere strictly tot he recommended dosages prescribed by licensed veterinarians and discuss thoroughly important things about potential risks/combinations with your vet.
How Often Can I Give My Pet Capstar?
While every case will be somewhat unique depending on factors like breed & overall health status; but generally speaking when using this medication consider waiting at least 24-48 hours between Capstar administrations. If you’re dealing with an infestation (say perhaps from a dog goes into nature walks regularly), it may not be the most effective long-term solution – consider investing in persistent parasite preventives coz as we all know prevention is better than cure.
How Do I Administer Capstar To My Pet?
If your pet has never taken medication before – this can be intimidating! Here’s how to do it quickly and easily
1. Start by setting up a nice, comfortable space
2. Get the pill ready for administration
3. Gently open your doggy or kitty’s mouth to insert the pill on their tongue
4. Encourage them to swallow with gentle massage/luring snacks (not saying bribe..butttt)
And that’s it – easy peasy…except sometimes animas will fight back like the agents they are!
Always check instruction label carefully prior to starting on any new medication regardless of its perceived simplicity.
The Verdict
After deliberation; here’s where we stand:
– Does Capstar kill ticks? There simply isn’t enough scientific evidence available yet however studies show varied results.
– Will Capstar get rid of fleas? Absolutely! Nitenpyram Is one of the most effective flea treatments out there eliminating up to 90% within six hours!
– Is cap star totally safe? Like anything else, no medication comes without risk but compared other medications frequently used today such as dips or sprays, side effects associated with nitenpyram have statistically low incident rates.
You’ll want discuss potential risks involved before administering product.
So next time you find yourself battling those sneaky blood-sucking assholes coming at ya through coature swerves like vampires in overuse romantic novels and freaky horror blockbusters alike … remember; Capstar just might provide some much (tick-free)-needed relief to your furry friend.
