Why is my thigh cramping?

Have you ever been perfectly cozy in bed, dozing off into slumber heaven, only to experience an excruciating cramp in your thigh? It’s like Jack Sparrow’s sword of pain has just stabbed you right through the leg. If this happens frequently or lasts for long periods of time, it can really put a dent in your daily functioning. So let’s get down to brass tacks and figure out what could be causing this torturous muscle spasm.

What is a Cramp?

A cramp is an involuntary contraction of one or more muscles that are suddenly NACHO LIBRE tight and unrelenting (thank you Captain Obvious). They can last anywhere from a few seconds to several minutes and generally cause sharp, intense pain. Common areas for muscle cramps include the thighs, calves (oh boy), feet (ouch), and hands (double omg ouchie) – but really they can happen anywhere on the body that has muscles.

Types of Cramps

There are different types of cramps which vary by their causes such as….
1) Idiopathic cramps
2) Muscle fatigue
3) Peripheral artery disease
4) Diabetes

Do not fret though! That was just some fancy medical terminology I got off Google because I’m clearly qualified enough to use BIG WORDS after performing heavy-duty research…

Possible Causes

Let’s take a good look at some reasons why these fiery demons might have caused choas in your legs.

Sedentary Lifestyle

Are you sitting on your bum all day eating cheetos while the most exercise accomplished was finding the TV remote under couch cushions? Well there’s something called ‘muscle atrophy’ which basically means loss/change of muscle tissue due lack of actual damn MOVEMENT!! Walking around even 30 mins every couple hours will reduce the chances of a nice charley horse.

Overuse

Congratulations you’ve now turned into Superman, with your lengthy runs or kickboxing classes (whatever floats your boat) but it seems like too much of a good thing just might kill you. Overexertion during physical activity or sports can lead to dehydration and a lack of electrolytes in the body which is SUPER BAD NEWS for leggies.

Medical Conditions

There is this miraculous concept called ‘medical conditions’ that occurs within humans, which most times manages to surprise even doctors themselves. Causes such as:
Age: As we age, our muscles get weaker.
Blood Flow Restriction : Disorders related to high blood pressure can restrict blood flow causing cramps.
Nerve Damage : If nerves signalling messages towards muscles are restricted then there could be problems with muscle contractions.

Prevention

As the saying goes “prevention is better than cure” – seriously folks trust me on this one; better use google right here right NOW;

But I’m feeling generous so take some tips from yours truly…even though at first they might sound lame when looking back may save us from excruciating pain:

  1. Hydrate yourself! Drink plenty of water before and after exercising especially if engaging in activities longer than an hour.
  2. A perfect example- warm up relaxedly before doing athletic performance since pulling an unprepared muscle = NO FUN!
  3. Stretch your legs every night before heading off to Beddy Bye’s land.

Treatment

Don’t fret if misfortune strikes! There are several home treatments available even if 20 fire alarms start ringing around ya!!

1) Spreading those toes apart will help lengthen cramped muscles in any region.. If possible walking helps stretch out the affected area additionaly massaging sore spot can also relieve rapid tension buildup!

2) SIMPLE WATER!! It combats dehydration which is one major reason for cramps. Additionally, you can choose to sip sweet drinks like coconut water or add salt to your diet that will replace lost electrolytes in the body.

Worth a trip to see a Doctor

If leg spasms happen most days out of nowhere without predictable external factors(certain type of exercise) — welp speedy changeup and make an appointment with ya doc!

Cramps shouldn’t impede normal routine particularly if occur frequently, reducing sleep time/keeping us awake at NIGHT– its just not healthy!

It’s important NOT TO ignore anything over here since might be anemia, low potassium/high calcium levels or other underlying health conditions; All worth investigating!!
