Why is my stomach rumbling so much?

Have you ever been in a meeting or lecture, trying your best to focus on the topic at hand, when all of a sudden your stomach decides it’s time for an impromptu symphony? Or perhaps you’ve been out with friends and all you can think about is the audible rumbling that seems to be getting louder and louder?

Fear not, dear reader! You are not alone. Many people experience this uncomfortable sensation on a regular basis, but have no idea what causes it. We’re here to help shed some light on why your stomach could be rumbling more than usual.

The Basics of Digestion: An Anatomy Lesson

Before we delve into the reasons behind excessive rumbling, let’s take a quick refresher course on how digestion works. When food enters our body through our mouth, it begins its journey down the esophagus and into the stomach where gastric juices break down the food further.

After spending several hours in the stomach (the exact time depends on various factors such as what type of food was eaten), chyme – partially digested food mixed with digestive juices – makes its way into small intestine where nutrients are absorbed by intestinal villi.

Once these vital nutrients have been extracted from our sustenance , peristalsis (churning movement) pushes waste matter along towards rectum and ultimately out through anus as faeces.

Whew! That may seem like quite an intense process for something we do every day without thinking much about it (we will come back).

So What Causes my Stomach to Rumble Like Crazy?

The act itself-our bodies digesting incoming foods- isn’t inherently noisy activity; however certain circumstances/conditions can increase noise levels :

1) Hunger Pangs

Hunger pangs occur when your brain receives signals from an empty stomach which causes release of hormones like ghrelin. These are indicators to your brain that it’s time for you to eat (so yeah, maybe listening and munching while reading this might be a good shout…)

2) Eating Gassy Foods

Certain vegetables such as broccoli or beans carry non-absorbable sugars that move down into the large intestines when digested. Bacteria present in the area digest these sugars which leads to gas production, distension and… let’s just call them ‘noises’.

Similarly carbonated drinks worsen things by ingesting air into stomach along with drink.

3) An IBS Flareup

A condition called Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), can also cause unusually loud stomach rumbles due excess muscle contractions that commonly induce cramping, abdominal pain as well constipation-diarrhoea cycle.

This breakdown does not paint pretty picture but we urge readers not – repeat, not- give up food entirely after reading.

What Can You Do To Stop The Rumbles?

Tums (antacid medication) or heating pad on belly may ease symptoms temporarily but don’t necessarily solve underlying issue so try some following tweaks:

1) Eat Slowly And Chew Your Food Thoroughly

It may seem obvious but slowing down how quickly one inhales their dinner is helpful – giving your stomach more time break down foods before sending chyme towards intestine makes total sense. If you struggle here, set yourself little goals: take at least two bites of your sandwich before scrolling social media feed; aim for making every mouthful last ten seconds rather than wolfing it all down in mere moments!

Chewing thoroughly makes task easier by breaking substance into smaller bits easing digestion process leading to less chances of thing getting stuck somewhere inside…

2) Avoid Eating Gas-producing Foods

As afore discussed gaseous vegetables & fruits aren’t helpful when trying to avoid loud stomach rumbles but also certain sugar free gums or candies, dairy items which lactose intolerant-intolerant individual pairs with can contribute rumbling belly.

3) Incorporate Probiotics & Increase Water Consumption

To decrease likelihood of IBS flares up individuals incorporate probiotics (found in yogurts ,supplements etc. ) or drink more water . We hear you read this advice at every place but if it works…

The Bottom line (…pun Intended)

Just as there’s no one answer for why we burp or sneeze, similarly everyone’s digestive system differs: some have hyperactive bowels while others endure sluggish food breakdown.

Regardless of the reasons behind the rumble, take solace that it happens to best of us – let out laugh-track worthy explosion and move onto next activity without shame- knowing digestion is often an unpredictable process!
