Why is my face always dry?
Do you feel as if your skin has a permanent desert on it? Well, rest assured that you aren’t the only one. Flaky, cracked skin can make a person want to crawl out of their own body and start over anew. So why exactly does this happen? And, more importantly, how in the world can we stop our faces from looking like dried up raisins?
In this article, we’ll explore the hilarious rather obvious answers to these burning questions and offer some tried-and-true tips for keeping your skin hydrated and supple.
What Causes Dry Skin?
Time to get serious: first things first – let’s talk about what causes dryness in the first place. While dehydration certainly plays a factor (so drink your dang water already), there are other culprits at play:
Genetics
Yep, sorry not sorry, but sometimes bad luck just runs in the family genes. If your mom or dad had super-dry skin growing up then chances are high that you will too.
Weather
Mother Nature isn’t always kind when it comes to skincare either – hot or cold climates as well as low humidity air-conditioning/heating units can all suck moisture from our precious epidermis.
Beauty Products
Now let’s get real petty (we’re blaming everything possible here): did Jane recommend her favorite facial toner hoping it would do wonders for her clogged pores with no regard for sensitive-skinned Jennie next door? Or were they too harsh with their usage thinking ‘more is better’? Point being – abrasive soaps/cleansers/moisturizers might be doing more harm than good.
Medical Issues
In rare cases certain medical issues such as psoriasis, eczema or thyroid disorders could trigger excessive flakiness.
While some of these factors may be out of your hands, we can work on the one that isn’t – modifying our skincare routine.
How to Avoid Dry Skin
Here are a few tips to avoid looking like we’ve aged 40 years overnight :
Invest in Quality Skincare Products
A lot of commercial products have those extra ads claiming they’ll turn back time or give you superpowers with just one use. But it’s always better to invest a little more for quality ingredients than buying something which will cause a breakout or burn your face instead (ouch!). Look specifically for moisturizers that contain soothing and hydrating ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, glycerin, ceramides etc.
Exfoliate + Hydrate
Your skin follows an intense workout regime too – shedding dead cells whilst producing new ones.Having said this though DON’T overdo it by replacing crucial oils that assist in keeping the moisture locked into your skin; so don’t exfoliate excessively. Instead try dry brushing once-twice weekly before stepping into shower then using an oil-based product immediately after.
Watch What You Eat
We mentioned drinking enough water earlier but what kind of food are you consuming ? Eating foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids (like chia seeds, fish)and vitamin E( almonds, sunflower seeds) is proved to increase overall skin health. So stock up fresh produce!
