Mental health, an aspect of our overall well-being that has been ignored and left to the shadows for a very long time. This may seem strange considering how crucial it is in our daily lives. You would expect that people would put more emphasis on their mental state, but surprisingly they don’t often give it even the slightest bit of attention!
So we ask ourselves, why do we neglect this essential part of our well-being?. In this article, we are going to explore some reasons why mental health is still ignored.
The Expectation to Toughen Up
We live in a society where everyone considers themselves tough or tries to appear as such; any instance of showing emotions seems like you are weak or incompetent. Sadly, most people have grown up with parents who’ve always told them to suck it up and be strong, especially males who have been socialized not show weakness at all costs because that’s what being a man means right? Wrong! Men deserve just as much emotional support from anyone when facing challenging situations!
How does Society Promote Toxic Masculinity
Society’s expectations only exacerbate matters further by perpetuating toxic beliefs about masculinity; boys should never cry under any circumstance or display any vulnerabilities since real men shouldn’t ever show those traits in front of others; only women are supposed to be emotional creatures. It is almost hilarious how easy one can associate every good quality out there with femininity while leaving no room for masculinity; I mean seriously guys grow up!
Stigma Associated With Seeking Professional Help
Another reason why mental health issues go unnoticed is the problem with seeking help from professionals. Many individuals need therapy sessions but refuse due to one stupid practice referred as putting “labels” on us.
They believe once they receive a diagnosis for their behavioral struggles, it becomes officially stamped on them forever- sure buddy keep living life the hard way. Seeking professional help is always a noble step towards recovering and coping with mental health challenges.
How Stigma Can Impede Progress
The stigma associated with therapy can be dangerous because it will prevent individuals who need assistance from getting it; folks might suppress their emotions or feel too ashamed to admit they have been going through tough times, thus isolating themselves further making progress on their recovery infinitely harder.
The Cost of Treatment
Therapy sessions are never cheap, which makes people hesitant in seeking them. Insurance companies treat mental illness differently than physical diseases, and as a result, medical coverage for such costs is either lost somewhere along individual finances or not even fully covered by insurance policies.
Without compromise majorly based on insurance providers’ bills rather than human well-being leaves modern society speculating whether access to therapy should only cater to some classes in our economy.
This epidemic of ignoring what’s essential deserves more attention now than ever! We cannot go about treating ourselves like ‘superhumans’, expecting everybody else around us to share our perspective- that hardly eliminates the problem of mental suffering from existence. Mental problems are real just as any other ailment out there; we shouldn’t isolate ourselves simply because we think that attempting reconciliation alone serves better when everyone needs empathetic support throughout the healing process.

It’s time we addressed these issues seriously since many lives rely on ending this toxic culture where admitting vulnerability seems so foreign- ironic isn’t it?. Once again say no More to shame considering emotional intelligence paramount toward creating societal evolution. So let us take care of our mind just as much were expected to tend for our body and soul!
