There are different reasons that cause our lovely complexion to turn pink (or very red!) but something they all have in common: blood. Yes ladies and gents, blood – that beloved liquid carrying oxygen around our bodies – is responsible for making us look flustered or sunburnt.

The Science behind Blushing

Blushing occurs when increased amount of blood flow underneath the surface of the skin results in reddening or flushing. It’s more noticeable on certain parts of the body, especially where there’s thin skin such as cheeks and ears. This happen most frequently from embarrassment, excitement or other strong emotions.

The nerves located beneath those patches become overstimulated causing tiny blood vessels called capillaries – which helps move waste-filled-blood back up to veins – under those sensory areas open wider than usual and let more “waste” through (i.e., deuterium oxide). As these capillaries widen allowing more rapid movement deeper beneath the thin layer of skin near sweat glands pores it becomes filled with deuterium oxide charged-bacteria and then congests resulting inflammation creating what we see visually as “red”.

Scary huh? But don’t worry folks; you’ll stop blushing eventually!

Other Causes: Allergies & Physical Irritation

Sometimes though blushing isn’t caused by emotional triggers but rather attributed due allergic reactions arising from cosmetics, lotions, medicine sating gastrointestinal worms within one’s intestinal tract soaked excessively using bleach yielding excessive dryness to the forearm(what was I thinking?), rash, and- just plain old physical irritation.

The Dreaded Sunburn

Too much sunlight can cause skin redness amongst other not-so-nice outcomes; another science-y term for this outcome is edema -swelling as a result of an injury-induced trauma (in the case here, sun damage). In severe cases, exposure to too much sunshine that creates pink-red and brown-inflammatory secretions in dermis layer.

To put it bluntly, if you spend too much time baking yourself under Mr Golden Sun your backside will go bright crimson! (And that’s definitely not cute.)
