Why does my right side of my face feel numb?

Have you ever experienced a tingling sensation on one side of your face that was so unsettling, it left you feeling like a confused llama trying to navigate their way through rush hour traffic? You’re not alone, my friend! Many people suffer from facial numbness, and while it’s not always serious, it can be downright annoying. In this article, we’ll explore some potential causes of facial numbness and ways to deal with the issue.

What is Facial Numbness?

Before we delve into why your right-side-of-the-face feels as if an army of ants invaded it, let’s take a brief moment to understand what “facial numbness” means.

Facial numbness typically manifests in sensations such as pricking or burning around the nerves that control sensation in the affected area(s). This numbing sensation may be accompanied by shock-like feelings or even temporary loss of consciousness.

Why Am I Experiencing Facial Numbness And How Can I Deal With It?

Now that we’ve gotten our definitions straightened out (ain’t nobody got time for mixing terminologies) , let’s explore possible reasons you might experience facial numbness:

1. Trigeminal Neuralgia

If your unholy discomfort revolves heavily around your jaw line and at times spreading up towards the temple…you’re probably dealing with trigeminal neuralgia. Essentially what’s happening is there’s pressure on one (or more) branches blocking blood vessels functions caused usually by irritation from contact between a healthy artery or vein and the trigeminal nerve itself causing pain /numbess which lasts about few seconds-several minutes (and sanity goes flying outta whack).

Relax amigo..we don’t go all gun blazing when it comes to fighting against TN but instead treatable medicines help alleviate certain forms like Carbamazepine or Gabapentin, in some circumstances if no initial relief physical therapy or even surgery is further considered(Holly hell..calm down Steve do not read too much into it yet). In the meantime avoid trigger foods that can cause worse symptoms-wink wink to you caffeine and alcohol.

2. Dental Issues

If you feel sensitivity lasting on always one side of your face( Oh damn) sometimes triggered by eating/drinking hot/cold food/beverage , suspect a dental issues straight away.Either gum diseases, cavities, some kind of abscesses or impacted wisdom teeth all of which can bring forth facial numbness.Arranging an appointment with your friendly neighbourhood dentist will help chalk out specific treatments.(Oh ey! at least we’ll come back home knowing our smile won’t be easily compered to plastic barbie’s grin anymore!)

3. Migraine Headaches

One moment you’re going about your day and the next, WHAM!, a headache that feels like Thor’s hammer hit right where Itchy & Scratchy  from The Simpsons go to when they die!!!(However,it’s just unbearable, stabbing pain that doesn’t contribute well whether being up close and personal with light nor sound senses- Yeah blame migraines/kidding)

For migraine sufferers, facial numbness simply begins as a warning sign before any head-splitting commence. While none now know how sure alarm message relates specifically in this scenario but scientists believe shifting blood flow may crush certain vessels leading to sensory changes within skin/followed by tingling sensations-can last for around half an hour.Painful days meanders off once medication kicks-in-nothing extraordinary.

What To Do When You Get A Migraine?

Meds: Often after diagnosis doctors prescribe Triptans/Sumatriptan available over-the-counter medicine promising faster results as compared to other alternatives.
Acetaminophen/Aspirin dependent on when taken or plain old Ibuprofen are second best.

Lifestyle Changes:Dodge the cue points, a list of personal routine things that like over sleeping, stress …and apparently chocolate, can induce migraines.

4. Bell’s palsy

Have you ever had this sudden moment in front of the mirror and realised only one side of your face seems to be smiling while other just sits there-all still? That’s literally Bell’s palsy happenening!

Bell’s Palsy is caused due to swelling/inflammation around the facial nerve resulting in slowing down transmitting instructions from brain towards various muscles responsible for forming both sides’ expressions-when our mood’s darn good! Result: One side is tight and lifted, other looks Snoopy has chosen as its muse.In most cases without any known prior condition or trauma with higher prevalence during pregnancy/middle age.

Now unless anyone wants lifelong photography resembling Donald Duck being sarcastic(BRING IT ON!), seeking out urgent medical attention and otherwise physical therapy may help speed up recovering bypassing surgical means unless absolutely necessary.(I say we build crazy creative ways to flaunt it away..)

Alternative Ways To Move Your Smile Upwards?

1) Massage- gently massage cheek(numb by default) before going onto corners/mouth itself moves stagnant blood which occupies space between muscle/connective tissues thus encouraging flow.
2) Exercises-lip pursing/smiling/grimacing(plz don’t look at neighbours when doing so). Hold each position for about few seconds via rotation-helps detangle facial issues brought forth by BP.
3) Acupuncture/(Psst-witnessed some try yoga)- placement of needles at certain points allow widening blood vessels for increased function do check-in officials table/tiepin/kidney n all shenanigans(oh wait…)

Conclusion:

Facial numbness isn’t always serious but has the potential to be quite frustrating. If you’re experiencing facial numbness accompanied by other symptoms such as pain or difficulty speaking, it’s best to seek medical attention right away. However, if these feeling seem mild and transcend after a certain amount of time one can alternatively try massages, exercising & dietary changes- for all ye know, sometimes facial numbness becomes an epic story worth showing off…or maybe not!
