Why do i have a boil on my gum?

Have you ever had something like a pimple, but much worse and much more painful show up on your gums? Or have you ever had an unexplained bump in your mouth that just won’t go away? Well my friend, you may be experiencing a boil. In this article, we will dive into the depths of this oral affliction and try to understand why the heck it showed up in your mouth.

What is a boil anyway?

A boil (also known as an abscess) is basically a big ol’ infection that forms underneath the skin. It usually appears as redness or swelling around where the infection started, but without proper treatment it can also turn into what looks like some kind of gross blister filled with pus. Yum!

Now that we’ve got our very scientific definition out of the way (Boring!) let’s dig deeper into what exactly causes these boils.

Causes:

Poor dental hygiene

Duh! Taking care of your teeth isn’t rocket science folks! When food particles get stuck between teeth and aren’t properly removed through brushing/flossing they become prime real estate for bacteria to grow. No one wants their body being used as fertile land for harmful bacteria growth because when that happens chances are high for developing boils on gums among other things such as cavities or gum disease (eww).

Trauma

Trauma from anything hitting/touching/chewing against our delicate gums could irritate them enough to cause inflammation which may lead to bacterial infiltration – enter stage right: BOILS!!!

Smoking

Smoking weakens tissues including those within our mouths making it easier for infections such as boils to take hold—another reason smoking is bad!

Okay so there are quite few reasons someone might develop a boil—but how does one know if they have one?

Symptoms:

  • Redness/swelling around the infected area (obvy)
  • Pain/tenderness when touching gums (OUCH!)
  • Breathing problems if boil is near throat region (WOWZA)

Treatments:

If you think you may have a boil on your gum, don’t panic. The good news is they’re treatable! Here are some treatments that can help alleviate and/or get rid of boils altogether.

Antibiotics

Nobody likes taking pills but sometimes they are necessary evils. Your doctor may prescribe an antibiotic to kill off any potential bacteria lingering in the pimple/boil thingy growing on your gum.

Dentist appointment

Hit up Doc McToothy and he/she will assist with draining pus from infection site or maybe even surgically remove nasty pest residing within mouth area.

Home remedies

Here are just a few home remedies—though not scientifically backed—that could work for board certified physicians i’m sure!

Saltwater rinse

Warm salt water helps reduce swelling as well as sterilize mouth so why not? Give it a whirl!

Ginger tea

Due to its anti-inflammatory properties ginger root boiled in tea water can help minimize inflammation thus healing tough-to-live-with oral bumps such as glands aka BOILS!!!

So there ya have it folks—if you find yourself experiencing any of these symptoms by all means try out 1/2/3 treatment options listed above(duh). And be sure to take care of those teeth (and gums) so nobody has bacterial infections like before – because seriously who wants them?? Nobody!!!
