Why do i always have cramps in my legs?

Are you tired of waking up in the middle of the night with a sudden, intense pain shooting through your calf muscle? Does it feel like someone is playing tug-of-war with your limb and not letting go? Fear not! You are not alone. Many people suffer from leg cramps at some point in their lives. Let’s explore why these uncomfortable sensations occur and what steps can be taken to overcome them.

What are Leg Cramps?

Leg cramps also referred to as a ‘Charley horse,’ is an involuntary contraction or spasm that occurs suddenly on the muscles of our lower limbs (shudder). This can happen while sleeping or during exercise; however, they tend to show themselves more often when least expected.

Have you ever had a leg cramp so bad that it felt like something out of an exorcism movie?!

If yes, then you probably know how taking one step feels like doing 50 squats!

Multiple factors cause muscle contractions resulting in short bursts of pain such as:

  • Dehydration
  • Electrolyte imbalances such as potassium deficiency
  • Excessive physical exertion
  • Age-related muscular degeneration
  • Underlying medical conditions

For instance, if you’re pregnant (blessed be the fruit), older than 65 years (Golden living folks) or have been diagnosed with certain diseases such as diabetes mellitus (Sugar High Club Member) among others might experience this discomfort regularly.

Let’s explain each reason underneath:

Dehydration

Dehydration means there isn’t enough water for bodily functions to work correctly (Yes everything actually needs sleep AND water!). Our body requires ions and minerals within fluids for red cell production, sensation signals between nerve cells,AND TO NOT CRAMP YOUR LEG MUSCLES – TAKE HEED PEOPLE!!

A lack of water affects these fluids, leading to an electrolyte imbalance. An electrolyte imbalance can cause muscle cramps in our body. Additionally, it is one of the most common reasons for leg cramps.

Electrolyte Imbalances

The right balance of sodium, potassium and calcium ions need to be maintained within your body otherwise it’s prone to develop muscle contractions. Your low levels of magnesium are possibly because well – you eat just junk all day (sorry truth hurts), or have kidney failure that alters the minerals’ excretion from our body interfering with nerve function regulation ion movement leading to cramp attack!

Excessive physical exertion

When exercising hard and overexerting yourself this can deplete nutrients leading to a buildup of lactic acid which often causes muscles fatigue making them more susceptible not only to soreness but also painful involuntary muscular twitching/cramping.

Where biting off more than one can chew feels like owning enough horsepower without knowing how soon they end up cracking under full engine speed producing smoke clouds on some potholes!

Age-related muscular degeneration

Just like wisdom teeth popping out with age so does wear and tear happen in human tissues as we get older, time isn’t kind!! Muscles lose their elasticity resulting in less flexibility thus increasingly getting fitted for Mr.Charley Horse’s visit over time.(Shame huh?!)

### Underlying Medical conditions

Several diseases increase susceptibility towards experiencing leg cramps:

  • Diabetes Mellitus
  • Neuropathy
  • Nerve compression
  • Liver cirrhosis
  • Chronic renal failure

In conclusion, if you’re continuously experiencing Leg Cramps {Tissues out} its NOT an isolated occurrence nor is there a simple solution. Careful attention may diagnose underlying health conditions; nevertheless drinking plenty of water potassium/magnesium-rich foods plus stretching/physical therapy may alleviate frequent experiences leaving Mr. Charley Horse at bay.
