Why am i winded all the time?

Are you constantly feeling out of breath? Like even just walking up a flight of stairs is enough to make you feel like you’ve run a marathon? Well, my friend, welcome to the Wonderful World of Being Winded. Don’t worry, though – we’re here to help figure out what could be causing your panting problem.

The Obvious Culprit: Lack of Exercise

I know, I know – nobody wants to hear this tired old excuse again. But it’s true! If you spend most of your time planted firmly on the couch munching popcorn and watching Netflix (no judgment), then chances are that when you do eventually have to move around it’s going to leave you gasping for air like a fish outta water.

Solution: Get Moving!

Even just adding in small bits of activity throughout your day can help build up your endurance over time. Take a walk during your lunch break or use commercial breaks as an opportunity for some jumping jacks or lunges (your cat may look at you funny but who cares?!) Starting off slow and increasing intensity gradually will help prevent injury and ensure that in no time at all you’ll be running marathons with ease (or maybe not but still…)

Poor Lung Functionality

If despite getting more active nothing seems to improve, there might be underlying problems with the way our lungs function which restricts airflow and thus causes us breathing difficulties.

Some factors affecting our lung functionality include;

Smoking

There are so many reasons not to smoke; stained teeth/discolored finger nails , fast & early ageing…and now poor lung health! From occasional social smoking cigars (don’t pretend ur too grown ;))to chainsmoking two packs a day if any amount fills several ashtrays daily, one thing leads too another creating heavy dependency…

  • Reduce cigarette consumption on a gradual basis, reduce room for smoking e.g sparingly in/outdoor spaces where it’s prohibited.
  • If you have a desire to quit consult your healthcare provider for options that work well and suit you

Airbourne toxins

Living or working in areas with poor air circulation i.e indoor gas stoves, chimneys without proper fuel discharge ,fumes from an upholstery which were used during the construction of furniture could cause long-term damage

Solution: choose properly ventilated spaces WITH fresh air flow.

Asthma

A chronic disease that affects bronchiole tubes in our lungs causing swelling, excessive production of mucous and other unwanted end results.

Symptoms include:

  • Wheezing
  • Chest tightness
  • Coughing

There are nighttime exacerbations (particularly irritating-pun intended) and day time asthmatic attacks not ignorable by individuals unfortunately.

Solution: Inhalers!

The most common way to deal with asthma is inhalers under prescription medication. Inhalers come as either short or quick acting(instant relief if symptoms occur suddenly )or those that offer combination therapy i.e controller & reliever all-in-one solutions. Prevention is better than cure!

If you experience persistent breathlessness get checked out today = urgent care might be advisable…

Anxiety/ Panic attacks

We can’t outright say one may not be experiencing any panic/anxiety episodes but they have surely become more prominent lately with day-to-day pressure increasing… Social media algorithms tend to skew reality making people feel like they’re missing out hence stressing up;but yeah anxiety/pasiaušalpas is real folks!

Sometimes when processing psychological triggers (like family drama at holidays etc.)the breathing rate slows down triggering the body into taking large deep breaths causing hyperventilation(Google it!). Over time this type of panicked breathing means having increased carbon di oxide level thus alarming respiratory receptors within our brain.

Solution: Lifestyle changes!

Instead of turning to alcohol, smoking or worse case diagnosable substance use; going for a run( potentially inducing cardio exercise may just be what the doctor ordered;)practice yoga and breath regulation techniques & mindful meditation – no self internalisation (calm yourself down!).
Mental health checkups would also do some good alongside creating social circles that allow positivity with no additional pressure.

Obesity

Our bodies requires a specific amount of oxygen to function well, oxygen is transported by blood within our body. The heavier one is ,the more oxygen required thus entire organs have to work harder resulting in breathing difficulties.

Solution: Exercise!

It’s the same message again but it works! If you’re categorized under overweight/obese BMI bracket within healthy fitness standards scheduled exertion sessions can improve lung capacity which reduces stress levels for all other remaining organs.
Increased daily water intake and reducing junk consumption while incorporating healthier meal alternatives would make require little adjustments overtime.

Smoking, secondhand smoke exposure as well as family history are risk factors amongst others.

Note this (settle)in your minds; medication should only be consumed when prescribed by your healthcare provider,& they only prescribe when instructions are adhered fully. You got this!!!
