Who’s the guy in the jardiance commercial?

If you’re like most people, you’ve probably seen the Jardiance commercial at least a few times. You know, the one with that guy who looks like he could be your friendly neighborhood pharmacist… but cooler? He seems to really believe in this new diabetes drug and wants you to try it too. But who is he? And why does he look so familiar? Let’s take a closer look at this mystery man.

The Actor

The actor’s name is Paul Freeman, and if his face looks familiar to you, that might be because he’s been on your TV screen before. Freeman has appeared in various TV shows over the past decade or so, including “Bones,” “Six Feet Under,” and “House.” He has also had roles in indie films such as “Notes from Underground” and “Strange Wilderness.”

Freeman is originally from Boston but now lives in Los Angeles with his wife (who happens to also be an actress) and their two kids. According to his IMDb page, Freeman got into acting after getting cut from his high school basketball team (ouch!) He attended Emerson College for theater studies before moving to LA.

Playing Diabetes Man

So how did Freeman end up playing Jardiance Guy (a.k.a Diabetes Man)? Well, according to an interview he gave with AdWeek magazine back when the commercial first aired (which was apparently quite controversial! More on that later…) Freeman actually auditioned for multiple parts alongside other actors.

“I came back again for every round of call backs until I finally wound up booking [the role],” Freeman told AdWeek.

But just because he booked Jardiance doesn’t mean playing Diabetes Man was easy work: In fact,he says filming involved wearing up seven different shirt colors all day long(that sounds annoying),as they were constantly shooting different scenes and needed to keep continuity.

Odds of Being Recognized in Public

Okay, so now you know the actor’s name, but let’s be real: When we see Freeman on screen during a Jardiance commercial, most of us aren’t thinking “Oh look, it’s Paul Freeman again!” Instead,he is forever going to be known as The Diabetes Guy. So does that mean he gets recognized all the time when he’s out and about?

According to another interview with AdWeek (I guess they really love talking to him!), Freeman says he definitely gets approached by people who recognize him, though not necessarily because of his role in this specific commercial.

“People will come up and say, ‘Hey man! You were great on ‘Bones’ or something like that,” Freeman explained. “It doesn’t matter what role it is — people just like recognizing someone from TV.”

So there you have it: If you do ever run into Paul Freeman on the street (which I don’t recommend stalking famous strangers !) ,feel free to compliment his work on any show other than “the one where he’s praising a diabetes drug.”

Criticisms Against Commercial

As previously mentioned, the Jardiance commercial starring Paul Freemans sparked some controversy when it first aired back in 2016.The ad depicts an older couple taking selfies while enjoying life after using Jardiance.By lowering their blood sugar levels, presumably. The final shot cuts from them hugging each other,to revealing both are missing limbs. But what caused outrage was not needle-phobia,but rather whether amputees could truly improve their situation through taking medication, and why diabetes management isn’t shown as priority instead. If commercials involving physical disfigurement make somone uncomfortable,I would suggest checking oneself for empathy conditions.

Not only was the reaction negative, but many patients shared their unfortunate personal situations : despite using such medications,Gangrene still led to unhealthy decisions that eventually caused amputation(upwards of 80% annual Infections in India coming from the big toe).Ultimately, the controversy had people questioning whether a lifestyle change and/or honest conversation with their physician was worth more than relying on seemingly too-good-to-be-true pharma drugs.

Fun Facts

Now, let’s wrap things up with some quick hits about Paul Freeman and Jardiance:

  • Freeman is also a writer — he co-wrote the short film “Black Hole” which premiered at Sundance Film Festival.
  • According to AdWeek (again!), Freeman originally auditioned for Jardiance as somewhat of an impractical joke: “I only went out for it because my wife thought it would be hilarious if I tried doing [a commercial],” he explained. But hey, it worked!
  • The Jardiance website describes the drug as being “part of a class of type 2 diabetes medications called SGLT2 inhibitors.” If you don’t know what that means (and let’s face it, most people don’t), suffice to say that this type of medication works by helping your kidneys get rid of excess glucose through urine. Thanks for reading! Hopefully now, when people asks ‘Who is the guy in his jardiance commerical?’,you’ll have something more interesting or useful than just saying,”Oh,I dunno, some actor!”
