What’s your eye color?

Have you ever stared into someone’s eyes and wondered what their eye color was? Then, after awkwardly having to ask, been like “Oh wow…that’s really cool/pretty/boring/not what I expected”? Well, guess what?! Your eye color is just as fascinating as the next person’s! Let’s dive deep into the subject of ~our~ your beautiful eyes.

The Basics: Pigmentation and Genetics

Did you know that some people can look like they have blue eyes but actually have brown pigment in the front layer of their iris? Or that babies are often born with light-colored eyes that later darken due to an increase in melanin production?

Yes, folks — we’re talking about pigmentation.

The amount and distribution of melanin (a pigment) within one’s frontal iris determines each human’s unique eye hue. Specifically:

  • Brown Eyes contain a higher concentration/larger amounts of melanin compared to other colors.
  • Blue & Gray Eyes result from scattered rays passing through a mostly clear or lightly colored iris/near absence of melanin presence.
  • Green Eyes occur when low or moderate(?) amounts of both brownspheres eumelanin and pheomelanin are mixed together lower/substantial percentages(?).
  • Hazel Eyes – commonly identified amongst Superman fans – display multiple colors ranging between green, brown, gold etc.(?). These traits usually show if more than two colors appear noticeably/mixing occurs(?).
    Can everybody say ‘MEGA MELANIN’?!

These rules seem fairly standard-yet-your-basic-science things…however genetics comes in here playing its deck strategically customizing everyone‘s outcome/randomness for good measure.

No You’re not Adopted nor Switched at Birth!

Usually it takes three genes affecting two persons/side(i.e six total), which transmit information related to dominant vs recessive inheritance traits, to decide what baby gets themselves into with their eyeballs(!^okay sounds big bro-ish but it’s not). Clearly these multiple pathways can result in quite a unique outcome compared to the gene pool you may have absorbed from your parental guardians/guardians in general.

Each person has 2 copies of each gene that work together: one passed on from Mom and one from Dad. Sometimes both genes are coded/produced exactly alike. Other times there is a dominant gene (like brown eyes), that essentially takes over making sure it shows up entirely whereas the recessive (like blue or green eyes) only appears if its given two/recessively/paired versions(?!)
Do with this information what you will at all those family reunions when people start comparing/blame game commences……

We know how much folks love Tableau!

Eye Color % of World Population
Brown 79%
Blue 8%
Green/Hazel 5%~7%

Something else besides pigmentation?

While we’ve been focusing on pigment so far, another factor impacting overall appearance counts! Some individuals may note freckly white/yellow marks located within iris known as conjunctival nevi potentially(good news!) turned down by specialists during regular checkups(we knew squinting like pirates wasn’t for nothing!).

Additionally Trauma brought by injuries, harmful habits,i.e smoking & sun-gazing could bring about structures resembling plaques formed which sometimes detract aesthetic appeal(did someone say #fashionoverfunction?).

The Personality Associations

Some personalities judges have harbored stereotypes towards associating certain eye colors with negative or positive attributes:

  • Blues Eyes : COLD AND CALLOUS OKAY WE GET IT(even more lol-worthy if they’re people of color!), Now Anyhoo….thanks to Sociological Imagination somehow some eyes may equate with Aryan Identity or ‘superior’. Kinds of people who have it are ‘calculating’,quiet, cunning’,generally without a lotta depth according to Sci-Fi and fiction.
  • Brown Eyes: Our EYEBROWNS THEY DO THE HEAVILIFTING. They tell the world exactly as it is – no nonsense here (also 79% majority contributes alot/a lot?) . These folks are seen as more dependable, self-reliant, and grounded than their lighter-eyed counterparts. Bet all you blue/green hazel’s out there feel so SPECIAL now!
  • Green Eyes : The insomniac’s delight/trials amongst trauma survivors that shouldn’t have one-up-ed brown but alas what can ya do? Often aka Hazel too, thinking on this shade spins tales of changeable personalities: creative, mysterious where they wear their artful eye abilities subtlety….is the green evergreen though?

As interesting/infuriating(?!)/inaccurate these assumptions might be just keep in mind that several academics among dating sites still publish papers exploring for any truth behind them.

Celebrities With Unique Eye Colors

Would things be complete if famouses weren’t given due recognition mirroring our glory?!

Celebrity Eye Color
Mila Kunis Heterochromia
Alice Eve One Blue One Gray/Heteyes
Rush Limbaugh Greenish Blue w/freckles
Megan Fox Blue/Green mix

Heterochromia Iridum means having two different colored irisesi.e David Bowie
The correct scientific term for us English Majors.

As always most of us regular folks have plenty variations compared to the celebs/top 1%ers. One thing I can tell ya though, originality really shines in these questioning times.

Something else besides pigmentation?

Aside from aesthetics let’s have some science talk about eyes and what other functions it aces!

Function Explanation
Vision Ok DUH! Eyes are the primary tool we use to see – them detecting light hitting retina? Genius(ish). The rods/cones located in back area of this structure contain proteins which respond pretty quick/faster than any other types of cells so that we perceive things sighs clearer.
BUT did you know that our little sensors help us sleep too? Using blue-light filtering apps for less phone-reliant activities post evening is said to improve better snooze time by urhm moving/controlling secretion or suppression patters/hormones giving state-of-the-art impact on mental acuity & mood in general. And all along we thought using alarms would suffice(pah!).
We could forever unpack technical working dynamics behind black-and-white vision vs colored.Lets just acknowledge our pupils constricting/reacting based on need – fight!) bright lights, distance, focus) flight!(dilated when scared startle reactions etc.Doesnt seem like much but hey who wants overthink…. (Jk feel free!)
-Non Verbal Communication-
Oh boy OH BOY.THIS IS SO FUN/DIFFICULT/WEIRD ALL AT THE SAME TIME.AS MUCH WE TRY TO FILTER OUR PRESENCE/SPEECH/LANGUAGE ARTFUL WAYS/.EMOTIONS GO READ RIGHT INTO THOSE PUPILS.You know..‘Pupillometry’….able figure if person into your words/body language and response to same stimuli(lol).Ever admire someone’s eyes locking twitch/freezing/etcwhile lying/thoughts/feelings of distance.Literally just us humans being a hot mess in front each other(rofl).

Taking public speaking classes on how to maintain direct eye contact without getting creeped out in turn an art-form compared to doing double dutch while holding jumbo watermelons. Eye contact also associated with need for intimacy/friendship,cringe flirting ((shudders)) and the common single nod across room with bff after awkward conversation at party……these little tiny circles hold most complexity ever.

Overall…eyes ARE THE GREATEST.Thanks genetics, pigmentation and melatonin cocktail making them individual wonders we can all admire(even behind masks!). Happy reading!
