The above mentioned medications have analgesic effects and should not be used for longer periods(e.g more than three days) without any consultation of a doctor
Sometimes earaches require stronger prescription medications to resolve fully .They help take down inflammation and treat underlying causes directly .
- Antibiotics– In the case that the earache is due bacterial infections antibiotics such as amox clav, ceftriaxone could be prescribed .
Keep in mind though,taking antibiotic unnecessarily can lead to antibiotic resistance.Make sure always consult doctor before taking antibiotics.
When To Seek Medical Attention
Most earaches will go away on their own or with minor intervention within a week, giving your body some time (and rest) may do the trick ,however in other cases medical attention might required so you need to look out for symptoms such as:
- The pain lasting more than 3 days
- Drainage from the ear
- Signs of hearing loss
