Whats edible?

Have you ever found yourself wondering what food is edible? Maybe you’ve eaten something that made your stomach churn, or perhaps you’re just curious about some exotic foods. Let’s take a hilarious and tongue-in-cheek look at what’s fit for human consumption.

The Basics: Food Groups and Constituents

Before diving into the various types of edible items out there(let alone in here) (excuse my French), let’s start with the basics. There are different food groups we should know about:

  • Fruits and vegetables.
  • Grains (rice, wheat, barley etc).
  • Proteins (fish, tofu, meat products).
  • Dairy products.
  • Oils and fats.

Each of these groups contains nutrients vital for our overall health such as carbohydrates, proteins vitamins minerals essential fatty acids among others all wrapped up by the philosophers’ overthinking straw men – human rights abuse advocates who argue simply pressing nuts to make delicious almond milk enslaves poor little almonds leaving it traumatized – ridiculous, I say!

How Do You Know If Something Is Edible?

Edibility isn’t rocket science; if an item can be safely consumed without negative effects on health or wellbeing—it is considered edible. Of course this definition comes with a few caveats. Here are some things to consider:

Physical Appearance

Can humans eat everything they see that resembles food? Unfortunately not! Some edibles have notable characteristics like bright colors contrasting dark tones to indicate calmness e.g Spaghetti Carbonara WARNING:contains 750 calories which might send one jogging away from their shadows while banana peels screaming ‘I am actually poisonous’ create yellow contrast but alas do not belong in our plates…unless roasted(lightning bolts).

Tolerance Limitations

Every individual has different tolerances when eating certain foods based on past experiences/hereditary considerations/lifestyle choices/how much research one has done on those particular food items, etc.Maybe you love to eat steak but can’t stand the idea of sushi or maybe you’re allergic to something specific. Either way, our individual limits play an essential role in determining what qualifies as edible for us(raising a toast).

Preparation and Cooking Methods

One man’s poison is another man’s delicacy; how an item is cooked plays a huge role in its edibility. Different foods require various methods of preparation before becoming safe for consumption. For example, rice needs boiling while meat necessitates grilling/roasting/cooking.Steaming vegetables makes them edible while raw leafy greens might give somebody a raging stomachache alongside certain cruciferous plants (don’t say I didn’t warn you)

Edibles: The Good, Bad And Ugly

The world is full of different types of edibles – some lover-worthy others—not so much(ever tried durian?) Here are some examples worth mentioning:

Fruits

Nature’s candy comprises fruits that come in varied shapes, sizes, tastes and textures—sweet juicy goodness. Examples include:

  • Apples.
  • Oranges.
  • Lemons.

and hey why not add guavas, dragonfruit, strawberries, mangos et cetera?

Vegetables

Veggies make up the most basic yet nutritious parts of many meals, however not all tastebuds are created equal. There are also veggies considered ‘gross’ by some people regardless despite containing significant amounts of vitamins required by human beings such as

  • Broccoli (sorry Al Roker).
  • Carrots (far from being tasteless just reviled conveniently coughs )).
  • Spinach.

Incorporating these into your diet could do more harm than good especially when overcooked softening their important nutrients(right u/_myexreddits), albeit suggested to be “healthy”(just hold the dressing!) and/or “filling”(human rights abuse advocates again eye roll).

Proteins

Protein levels are essential for building/repairing body tissues, among other things. But here’s a fun fact not all proteins come from animals. Examples:

  • Fast-food burgers.
  • Chicken breast (LEAN).
  • Beans.
  • White meat turkey.

Moving on to exotic protein such as crocodile meat/snails/guinea pigs…GAG! (fear in my small intestines)

Dairy Products

Dairy is an excellent source of calcium that comprises extremely varied edibles:

  • Milk.
  • ice cream(kids love this stuff probably because it has enough sugar content),
    cheese (cheddar/swiss/feta et cetera),
    Sour cream/yogurt/cottage cheese.

Those on special diets can opt-in for dairy-free alternatives like coconut milk: Same creamy taste minus lactose intolerance issues—WINNING!

Things You Thought Were Edible but Aren’t

Think you know everything there is when it comes to edible items? Think again!! There are many food-items we grew up eating daily which aren’t really consumable human foods or at least don’t make the cut due to their nature. Here some examples worth pondering over(and speaking of what makes the darndest non-human form eatable object, hey tikka masala doorknobs have their place too!).

Soap

It might foam up nicely cleaning bacteria away(Nickelodeon with its green slime trick), but soap shouldn’t be considered anything more than ecological confusion…never had eaten bars before??? Anyone??? (throat clearing).

Raw Flour and Batter

Many people indulge in raw cake batter and unbaked cookie dough while baking despite being warned time immemorial concerning E.coli risks arising from uncooked products such as eggs/baking powder/flour(the struggle is real).

Non-Food Items

Ever been hungry thought of munching on plastic/sand/paper/baby powder/your fingernails even? That’s a NO level matter (scratching my head).

Edible Plants and Weeds

It might surprise you to learn that not all weeds are bad(marijuana aka weed isn’t included folks!). Some contain vitamins, resins, alkaloids considered advantageous in traditional medicine however this works only while ensuring they’re 100% safe for consumption because sometimes what is labelled a “weed” today might very well be meal tomorrow(correct u/_minimalistmother nudging at some botanical gardens owners out there). Lettuce leaves/dandelion flowers can surely hit the mark(better check those labels though sic!).

Conclusion

In conclusion(someone pass me a bottle opener I need to crack an egg tip[not really],), edibles encompass far beyond basic fruits, vegetables or proteins. Preparing them(throw salt over your shoulder three times!)with care ensures more than just taste but also health benefits too with hilarious outcomes such as my grandmother trying to use mustard and ketchup interchangeably(servant leadership anybody?).So do we fully know what’s edible? In definition YES…but context varies widely(wink wink)!
