Whats dvt?

Believe me when I say that DVT is not some hip abbreviation for “Delicious Vanilla Treat.” No, no, no. It stands for Deep Vein Thrombosis and it’s nothing to joke about (except maybe a little). So what exactly is this medical mystery? Allow me to break it down for you.

What is DVT?

In layman’s terms, DVT happens when a blood clot (also known as thrombus) forms in one or more of your deep veins – usually in your legs. This can cause swelling, redness and blotches all while being incredibly painful. If left untreated, the clot could travel through your bloodstream and end up somewhere really inconvenient like your lungs or heart.

How does one get it?

Ah yes, the million-dollar question. There are quite a few things that can increase your risk of getting DVT such as:

  • Prolonged bed rest
  • Pregnancy
  • Genetics (thanks Mom and Dad)
  • Smoking
  • Obesity
  • Cancer
  • Certain medications

Basically if you’re feeling lazy on the couch with a cigarette hanging out of your mouth while simultaneously taking birth control pills and chomping down some bacon cheeseburgers – well then congratulations! You’re living dangerously.

Symptoms

If you’re thinking “Hmmm this guy talking about his cool new tattoo ideas seems unimportant compared to my newfound ailment” then don’t worry pal because here are some telltale symptoms:

  1. Swelling
  2. Redness
  3. Warmth in affected area
  4. Painful cramping sensations

If these ring true for you then go ahead and call yourself Dr.House because we may have another diagnosis on our hands!

Diagnosis

Alright so now that we’ve got ourselves an inkling that you may have DVT, let’s head on over to how this whole thing is diagnosed. Your doctor may ask a bunch of nosy questions like if you’ve traveled recently or if there’s any history in the family (ahh the joys of small talk). After interrogating his patient, he’ll probably give your legs and feet a good once over – looking for any signs of swollen veins.

Additionally, he might use one or more fancy-schmancy tests such as:

  • Doppler ultrasound
  • Venography
  • Blood test to check for blood clots

Treatment

You’re not gonna like this next part but treatment for DVT usually involves a certain amount of Ouchies. This can include injecting yourself with blood thinners known as anticoagulants which come with their own array of risks (like everything in life am I right?). Additionally, compression stockings are also an option since they apply pressure on the affected area promoting better circulation. In severe cases where the clot is extra stubborn (kinda like my old math teacher) surgery may be necessary.

Prevention: Less burgers and More squats!

To keep our legs healthy we need to move around every so often (nope sorry Netflix binge-watching does not count as exercise), avoid smoking and prioritize maintaining a healthy weight. Most importantly remember to stay hydrated! Who knew chugging up water could save you from a medical calamity?

Conclusion

In conclusion folks, do NOT take DVT lightly because it has some potentially serious side effects including leaving us unable to enjoy those delicious vanilla treats forevermore!
Stay informed; eat well, move regularly and look after those limbs!
