What’s an enema?

We all know that life can be full of unpleasant surprises, from unexpected bills to a bad hair day. But what about when the problem is a little more… intimate? That’s where enemas come in.

First things first: what exactly is an enema?

An enema is a procedure that involves introducing liquid into the rectum and colon through the anus. The purpose of this injection is to cleanse the lower bowels or deliver medication or other substances directly into your system. Think of it as giving your bowels a spa day…although probably not one you’d want to tell all your friends about over brunch.

Enemas have been around for centuries, but nowadays they tend to be used primarily for medical reasons rather than recreational ones (more on that later). They’re often recommended by doctors as part of preparations for certain surgeries or procedures, such as a sigmoidoscopy or colonscopy. It’s like prepping your pipes before some seriously heavy duty construction work.

The ins and outs (and ups and downs) of getting an enema

While getting an enema might sound intimidating at first glance, it actually doesn’t take that much effort – provided you’re comfortable with shoving something up there yourself…

And YES we are talking about someone putting something up their own ass!

But if you don’t feel like playing doctor then:

Step 1:

Firstly, you’ll need an “enema kit”, which essentially consists of a bag or bottle filled with water (or sometimes another cleansing solution), tubing leading from said bag/bottle towards either end; namely Nozzle A- inserted into where sun stops shining OR Nozzle B-inserted from Where Food Comes Out chamber connected via flexible hose.

Step 2:

Next up it’s time to prep – strip down so there’s no chance anything gets stuck; need I say more?

Step 3:

Now here’s the part that might feel a little strange at first: inserting the nozzle of your enema kit into your rectum, then opening up the valve and letting that saline goodness flow! It might take a bit of trial and error to figure out exactly how much liquid you can comfortably hold in there (anyone else feeling like Maverick from Top Gun?)

This portion will probably have you resembling something akin to Old Faithful so make sure you’re standing over some towels or near a toilet.

Why would someone use an enema?

So now we know what an enema is and how it works. But WHY would someone want to go through all this effort?

1) Medically advised
Carrying on where our original post left off — Enemas for many decades were utilized medically, they are useful for clearing bowels before medical examinations.
These could be anything from diagnostic tests performed by a doctor like they discussed earlier OR even surgery!

Sometimes using laxatives alone wouldn’t do the job – but introducing water or another fluid directly into your lower GI tract can really get things moving, if no result caused after drinking/popping pills.

2) For constipation
Besides being used preparatory means; medicinally speaking enemas often help treat chronic constipation, particularly in elderly people who already suffer from issues digesting food properly.

But let’s be real- sometimes all that fibrous-leather-sandal granola does its magic one time too many 🌱 In those situations when “Nature calls” isn’t doing enough try an enema instead.

Listen babes, life happens…sometimes going number two regularly just isnt feasible.

3) Sexual pleasure
Finally we come to recreational uses… And while we won’t delve too deeply into this particular topic (no pun intended) , let’s just say that some folks enjoy the sensation of an enema for other reasons. Yeah, yeah judge all you like my friend it’s called Consenting Adults.

To be sure; we must note though that using enemas as a sexual practice is usually deemed unsafe and not recommended by medical professionals – so please don’t try this at home!

Types of Enemas

There are several different types of enemas out there, each with its own unique purpose:

1) Cleansing or purgative
This type is perhaps the most well-known – some refer to it simply as a “colonic”. It usually involves using plain water or saline solution to flush out your lower GI tract in order to get rid of built up waste. This process facilitates clearing up bowel movements without adding additional irritants/laxatives

This has become pretty big business today too, with many wellness spas offering colonic treatment programs!

2) Retention
Sometimes physicians prescribe something known as “medicated retention” treatments to deliver particular liquids right into patients bowels –when oral administration isn’t feasible i.e vomiting will cause medication to seek other means.
Remember when we talked about how doctors use enemas preparatory measures prior to certain procedures? Yes,this comes under the same head

Anesthetic agents may apply as well in surgery preps (so good luck staying awake during that part!)

3) Nutrition
Believe it or not, enemas have been used historically since Hippocrates era for administering nutrition directly into parts which cannot tolerate oral intake.

This can involve delivering fluid into your GI tract that’s packed with things like vitamins and minerals – often prescribed for folks who can’t keep food/beverages down on their own.

We hope this rundown answered any questions you had about what an enema actually entails (oh come on,you definitely Googled- have no shame mama ) And while they might seem strange or even uncomfortable at first, many people swear by them for improving their digestive health routines.
Ultimately partaking in such a thing is a personal choice; something that should be considered with discretion and not ignorantly attempted without consulting your medical provider beforehand.

We just hope you’ve found this information reassuring -and entertaining of course- so next time someone mentions an enema…just remember…you’re informed and ready to talk about the process? 😂
