Whats a good chapstick to use?

Chapped lips are no laughing matter, but that doesn’t mean we can’t have a little fun on our quest for the perfect chapstick. Trust me, I’ve been there. You try one brand and your lips feel like they’re coated in candle wax; you try another and you might as well be rubbing sandpaper across them.

But fear not my fellow chapped-lip comrades! I have scoured the earth to find the best chapsticks out there (okay, maybe just my local drugstore), so sit back, relax and let’s dive into this sticky topic.

First Things First: Why Do We Need Chapstick?

Oh come on, do I really need to explain this one? Fine fine, let me lay it out for you in case you’ve been living under a rock with no access to TV commercials or magazines:

  • Our lips don’t produce oil like the rest of our skin does.
  • This makes them more susceptible to dryness and cracking.
  • And thus enters chapstick, our knight in shining armor that helps moisturize and protect those delicate little pouts.

Now that we’re all caught up on why chapstick is essential (I mean seriously people, where have you been?), let’s discuss what makes a good one.

The Dos and Don’ts of Chapstick Shopping

Before we get into specific brands or types of chapsticks, let’s go over some basic guidelines for what to look for (and what to avoid) when shopping for this lifesaving lip balm:

DO Look For…

  • Moisturizing ingredients such as beeswax, shea butter or cocoa butter
  • SPF protection if using during daytime hours
  • Soothing additives such as vitamin E or menthol

DON’T Even Think About Buying If…

  • It contains artificial fragrances which may cause irritation
  • Cheap, low-quality ingredients are listed high up on the ingredient list
  • It has a waxy texture that doesn’t absorb well

Keep these dos and don’ts in mind as we explore some of my top chapstick picks.

My Top Chapstick Picks: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

I’ve tried out plenty of chapsticks in my lifetime, so I’ll spare you the agony of sorting through all the options yourself. Here are my personal favorites (and least favorites) in no particular order:

The Good

1. Burt’s Bees Beeswax Lip Balm

Okay, this one is probably an obvious choice for most people but it’s just too good to ignore. With natural emollients like beeswax and vitamin E, this chapstick leaves your lips feeling soft and hydrated without any artificial fragrance or flavorings getting in the way.

2. Aquaphor Healing Ointment Lip Repair

Don’t knock it ’til you try it! Yes, Aquaphor is technically marketed as a healing ointment rather than a lip balm but hear me out – it works wonders on dry, cracked lips. This stuff is like a miracle worker; within minutes of applying it your lips will feel smooth and plump again.

3. Jack Black Intense Therapy Lip Balm

Not only does Jack Black Intense Therapy offer SPF protection, but its formula contains antioxidants such as green tea extract which can help repair damage from UV rays or pollution.

The Bad

1.Blistex Medicated Lip Ointment

As someone who really dislikes strong menthol scents/flavors (seriously did anyone actually enjoy those Listerine breath strips?), this was not the chapstick for me.
Blistex Medicated claimed to soothe dryness with camphor and menthol, but instead it felt like my lips were being attacked by the sharp minty scent.

2. EOS Lip Balm

I know, I know – everyone and their mother seems to love these cute little egg-shaped lip balms. But hear me out: they’re just not as effective as some other options on this list.
The waxy texture didn’t absorb well into my lips, and after using several of them over time I found myself unimpressed by the lack of long-term moisturization.

The Ugly

I’m not even going to waste my breath here. Let’s just say that no chapstick is better than a bad chapstick, okay?

In Conclusion (But Seriously Don’t Skip This Part)

Hopefully this article has given you some ideas for what kind of chapsticks might work best for your needs.
However, before closing up shop please remember:

  • Drink enough water! Staying hydrated is one of the most important things we can do to keep our skin healthy from head-to-toe.
  • Try to avoid licking/chewing/biting at or around your lips; doing so can cause more dryness and irritation.

Stick with these tips (get it? stick?), stay vigilant in your search for the perfect lip balm match and soon enough you’ll forget all about those days where painful cracked patches made staying properly hydrated feel like an uphill battle.

Happy chapsticking!
