The 70s: A Time of Disco, Funk and… Heartburn Relief?
The year was 1979, and disco fever was in full swing. It was also the year when Zantac burst onto the scene! Developed by pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), Zantac quickly became one of the best-selling drugs in America.
How Does Zantac Work its Magic?
I know what you’re thinking: “Hey smarty-pants writer person, I don’t care about old disco music or greedy pharmaceutical companies – tell me more about this hot new heartburn medication!” Alright already, yeesh.
Zantac contains an active ingredient called Ranitidine which works by blocking histamine receptors in your stomach thereby reducing acid production thus giving great relief to individuals who suffer from gastroesophageal reflux disease(GERD) as well as other digestive issues.
From Strength to Strength
After its launch in ’79, it didn’t take long for people all over to start singing (or shouting) praises around just how wonderful a drug Zantac is with several generic brands available now known generically as ranitidine all because Ziplock Popsicle bags were not big enough market.
By its tenth anniversary in 1989 ZANTAC RANITIDINE, had become widely used worldwide and GSK raked up billions every year selling prescription and OTC food supplement (with proven efficacy and safety at the heart of it)
A Brief History Lesson
For those of you who enjoy a good history lesson, here’s something interesting: Zantac was actually created by a team of scientists led by Sir James Black, who won the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1988. This guy knew his stuff!
Enter the Generics
As with any successful product, soon there will always be copycats looking to get their slice of profits pie too. Soon after Ranitidine(Zantac) hit big on the market other pharmaceutical firms began producing generic versions so patients wouldn’t have to pay such exorbitant costs.
Today generic ranitidine still helps millions deal confidently with digestive issues is available over-the-counter in every pharmacy near you. Some may say life would’ve been much harder without this medication
