What triggers non allergic rhinitis?

Ah, spring; the bees are buzzing, the birds are chirping and your nose won’t stop running. As one who suffers from non-allergic rhinitis, I know firsthand how frustrating it is to constantly have a drippy faucet of a nose.

But why does this happen? Are we cursed by some ancient pharaoh? Did we insult Dionysus and he’s punishing us with never-ending sniffles? Fear not my fellow nasal-drip companions, as today we’re going to dive into what triggers non-allergic rhinitis.

First Things First: What is Non-Allergic Rhinitis?

For those unacquainted with the term “non-allergic rhinitis”, it’s just like regular allergies only without any allergens present. While allergic rhinitis (AR) is caused by immune system reactions triggered by allergens such as pollen or dust mites, non-allergic rhinitis can occur at any time since there will always be something that can cause irritation.

There are two types of non-allergenic causes for this annoying condition:

Vasomotor Rhinirits

This manifestation is considered when exposure to irritants like smoke or perfumes disturb way too much blood flow in our vessels causing discomfort in breathing leading over-time to stuffy noses – which then leads us to blow out our brains trying relieve ourselves!

Symptoms:

Aside from feeling particularly irritated at everyone carrying perfume around you all day long (seriously?! Who needs all that heavy scent!?), here some symptoms you may experience if you suffer from vasomotor rhinintitis:

Symptoms
Runny nose
Sneezing cascades
Nasal congestion
Postnasal drip

It’s important to note also that these symptoms do not result from an allergic reaction.

Rhinitis Medicamentosa

This lovely condition occurs because of a little something called “rebound congestion”. Essentially, rhinitis medicamentosa is when your nose attempts to make up for the awful mistake it made in not congesting itself. Lovely! It’s often caused by using nasal decongestants too frequently or for too long.

Symptoms:

So, how do you know if this monster has inflicted itself upon you? Here are some signs that you could be suffering from rhinitis medicamentosa:

Symptoms
Nasal congestion
Mucus production
Postnasal drip

The best part? These three symptoms cause bloody headaches all day long!

What Triggers Non-Allergic Rhinitis?

Now that we’ve established what non-allergic rhiniritis means and the causes behind its existence; let’s dive into things that can trigger it.

Environmental Factors

Pollution and Chemicals: What could say hello to our noses more than pollution!? Yey! The dust particles floating around us all day-long sure can constantly irritate our respiratory systems. Similarly, harsh chemicals like cleaning sprays and perfumes (Down with ’em I Say)can also play havoc on our sensitive nostrils leading eventually to stuffy noses even after exposure has taken place!

Temperature Changes: Nooooooooooo!!!! Not temperature changes!!! How will evolution ever catch up?! Yes my friend, very cold air (particularly during winter months) may lead right into irritating nasal passages -also springtime due t sudden climate changes tempreature fluctuations happen rapidly harming us causing flu-ish tendencies such as runny noses & coughs even worse

Dietary Habits

Fancy giving a bottle of soulless energy drinks combined with loads of carbs and sugar filled foods (Pizza pepperoni anyone?) infused sodium compounds which leads towards a double whammy for our noses. Consuming too many dairy products, sugar or spicy foods may lead to inflammation of nasal tissue -ultimtely leading us right into the pleasant sensation that is stuffy nose!!!

Occupational Hazards

Occupational hazards like sawdust, animal dander, and chemicals often used in certain jobs can all be a source of irritation! Accountants rejoice as you are mildly safer from this problem…phew!

Final Thoughts

Now we know what triggers non-allergic rhinitis with regards to environmental factors, dietary habits and occupational hazards;let’s focus on avoiding these whenever possible.

Sadly there will always be something around which causes irritation but knowing what they are should help us gain some control over this condition. Don’t forget: It’s always best to consult with your doctor if you ever experience any discomfort whatsoever!
