What states have the kissing bug?

Before you pucker up for your significant other or your furry friend, beware of a sneaky little bug that’s making its way around many states in America. This small and unforgiving pest is known as the kissing bug. Yes, the same kissing bug that can cause Chagas disease in humans and pets.

The transmission occurs when infected feces from the insect enters through open sores on humans or animals or if they eat food contaminated with droppings (yuck). The symptoms of Chagas disease can range from mild to severe, including fever, swollen glands, rash at bite site, fatigue and liver damage among others.

So which states should you take extra precautions in? Well put down those bags folks because we’re about to list them all!

Southern Texas

This might not come as a surprise since this region has been dubbed “ground zero” for this nefarious insect due to its subtropical climate. Southern Texas’ border with Mexico also makes it easy for these bugs to travel across borders.

Regardless of whether you live near an infested area or just plan on visiting Texas soon – consider how suave you really need to be before puckering up!

Other Areas within Texas

Unfortunately home sweet home isn’t safe either! It seems like these infamous insects have claimed much more territory than what meets the eye. They’ve made their presence known throughout most areas in Texas- counties such as Bexar County where San Antonio is located reported over 40% detection rate between 2013-2014 (Gasp).

That being said don’t let fear stop you from enjoying everything Austin has to offer like watching millions of bats ascend into the dusk sky every night ‒ free flying treats anyone?

Louisiana

Louisiana wins another award besides gumbo…zzzzz coughs I apologize lost interest for a second there! The point is that Louisiana is another hotspot for the kissing bug with cases being reported in multiple parishes.

So if you love crawfish boils and jazz music, just make sure to take extra precautions before locking lips!

Arizona

Who knew such a dry state could pose such a threat! Not only do Arizonians have to worry about heat exhaustion but now they also have to keep their guards up for this little pest.

From Maricopa County all the way down to Cochise county, Arizona seems overrun by these pests.

New Mexico

Another southwest region hit hard by these critters; cases of detection reveal positive reports throughout counties like Bernalillo among others.

Maybe skip on those epic hikes when visiting New Mexico – it’s not worth the risk my friends! The great outdoors can be a beautiful thing…unless you contract Chagas disease of course.

Oklahoma

This midwest state has managed to steer clear from so many natural disasters but alas it wasn’t able to evade this one: Reports show bugs detected within nine different counties around Oklahoma over recent years.

The Midwest isn’t as immune as we thought folks…neither are your smooches!

California

It doesn’t seem like anywhere is safe anymore people, not even our beloved Californian beaches!! Detection of Triatomine specimen (the actual name of said biting bug) across select regions including San Diego proves so.

From dancing at Coachella and trekking through forests in Yosemite National park – There’s no lack of excitement out west but please remember protection first!

While rampant infestations may seem scary initially – taking necessary precautions will help avoid both human and animal contraction allowing us all breaths deeply….to continue with our hot summer flings!!

  • If traveling or living within any aforementioned states then consider installing window screens especially during peak summer periods!
  • Eliminate any piles of wood or rocks around the home since these create habitats for the bugs which may be hiding underneath.
  • Help your pet by not letting them roam free at night, in fact keeping pets indoors altogether would add an extra layer of protection
  • Or if we’re totally honest maybe just stick to forehead kisses and high fives like our grandmothers wanted all along?

It’s better safe than sorry folks!

So there you have it folks; a list of states that should be approached with caution when showing affection thanks to some pesky kissing bugs. At the end of the day no state is immune from danger and whether you find yourself surrounded by snow, sand or cacti make sure to keep this disease on your radar!

Just remember, avoiding open-mouth contact is only one part but ultimately being aware, taking precautions can prevent bites thus reducing chances of infection greatly.

Stay Safe guys – always protect before puckering up!
