What problems can carmine cause in humans?

If you are an avid label-reader or have a phobia of bug-filled food, chances are you may have come across the ingredient “carmine” on a food item’s packaging. Carmine has been used as a coloring agent for centuries, but what is it exactly? And more importantly, what risks does it pose to human health?

What is carmine and where does it come from?

Carmine, also known as cochineal extract or natural red 4, is derived from crushed female cochineal insects. Yep – those little creepy crawlies native to South America that feed on cactus pads. The bugs themselves are boiled in water and then filtered repeatedly to produce a bright red pigment.

So far so good…what could go wrong?

Well…there actually are some pretty major issues associated with consuming carmine.

Allergic reactions

One common risk of consuming carmine is experiencing an allergic reaction. As with most allergen responses – even small exposure to carmine can lead to inflammation throughout
the body/skin irritation/itchiness/hives.

Digestive distress

Another problem associated with consuming large quantities of carmine is digestive discomfort including stomach cramps, bloating and/or diarrhea.

Gastrointestinal tract tumors

Overconsumption of anything has consequences- sometimes dire ones like gastrointestinal tract tumors (aka cancer). That being said , there isn’t conclusive research whether eating foods containing more than trace levels() of carmine increases your risk. The limited testing done until now hasn’t really found any direct link between consumption and tumor development().

So while occasional consumption probably won’t result in life-or-death situations,it isn’t completely without risk either.

Wait! There’s More
