What medications have a black box warning?

Oh my word, have you heard about medications with a black box warning? These warnings are serious business; they indicate that using these meds might result in life-threatening reactions or death! Yikes, right?!

But what is a Black Box Warning anyway?

You might be thinking it’s something to do with boxing matches, well I hate to break it to you but this kind isn’t as fun. A black box warning is the FDA’s strongest type of safety alert for prescription drugs as mandated by US law which cautions healthcare providers and patients regarding known risks associated with medication usage. Who said taking pills was easy?

Now let us get straight into the topic everyone is eager to know about these scary Pharmaceuticals.

Antidepressants

Antidepressants seem like lifesavers if we were living on top of mountains amidst nature but there’s another side too. Some of them come packed with their own set of baggage giving rise for special caution before popping one down your throat:

Fluvoxamine -:

Do not take fluvoxamine alongwith alosetron- seems dangerous enough.

Fluoxetine:

Everything was hunky dory until fluoxetine showed up causing multiple abnormalities like suicidal thoughts in children and adolescents put under its influence (Irony at its finest).

Venlafaxine:

Venlafaxine has got people talking after cases came out where those using it developed high blood pressure, vision problems (aye what?) and even found themselves needing treatment on hemodialysis(oh no!).

Time flies when reading doesn’t matter eh?! Unfortunately here at times we gotta delve deep to save lives…

Anti-diabetic treatments

Diabetes can feel challenging already without adding additional worries-. However anti-diabetics are infamous for bringing complications galore making things worse than imagined.

Rosiglitazone

Rosiglitazone, a drug which increases the sensitivity of insulin receptors, has been associated with heart attacks and failure juxtapose to pioglitazone, another classmate that shows hepatotoxicity (which can cause liver toxicity). Monday blues now come in different ways!

Glipizide

Glipizide , an anti-diabetes medication that helps lower blood sugar levels has its moment under the limelight as it can have a bad effect on some people’s skin causing reactions like blistering, itching or rashiness.

Antipsychotics

Antipsychotic medications are usually given to those experiencing symptoms such as hallucinations and severely altered thinking patterns caused by schizophrenia or bipolar disorder among other mental health issues. However this isn’t without consequences at times…

Quetiapine:

With multiple side effects from decreased white cell count leading up possibilities for infections to even seizures happening all due to quetiapine we certainly wouldn’t advise considering one anytime soon.

Risperdal:

Risperidone is in many cases linked with promoting extrapyramidal symptoms including dystonia(cranky muscles), parkinsonism(restless legs) till tardive dyskinesia(wandering scars). Not so pretty situations!

Keeping track? Let’s carry on…

Anti-inflammatory Drugs

Anti-inflammatory drugs offer sweet relief concerning Chronic Inflammatory External Ophthalmopathy(CIEO) and numerous diseases where pain management is essential but give heed before popping ‘em willy nilly.

Ketorolac

The use of ketorolac may lead ending up life-threatening Methemoglobinemia – increased amount of methemoglobin(harmful components within red blood cells), Ah elements bonding hasn’t sounded more deadly right!.

Diclofenac

Diclofenac isn’t shown much love either- Intravascular administration(of diclofenac) could get you Thromboembolic events(realdeal blood clots) happening to you.

Anti-hypertensive treatments

Hypertension can cause numerous health issues like heart disease and stroke with those with high blood pressure seeking out medicines in order to manage the condition effectively- again there is that additional baggage.

Methyldopa

Methyldopa, a tall-tale antihypertensive medication, has its own contraindications ranging from severe liver disease(because why not send it right home!) till causing hemolytic anemia(rapidly breaking down of red blood cells). Be on your guard!

Clonidine

Clonidine use can lead up reaching dangerously low Blood Pressure; seems like pressures do exist inspite us wishing they didn’t.

Chemotherapy Drugs

Now cancer much less chemotherapy is something no one wants anything to deal with but if luck isn’t by our side then we need some chemotherapies whether intravenous or oral drugs aimed at neutralizing errant behavior in our bodies lest rogue cell growth continues unchecked.

Pazopanib:

Pazopanib, when injected you otherwise have got Frequent Urination, failing Kidney(to wit Acute Renal Failure which takes place spontaneously), hypoglycemia(reduced levels of sugar within the bloodstream).

Seems as though medications always come attended by a sinister gleam – being careful before taking them certainly doesn’t hurt especially given their potential proclivities for heralding our demise!
