What kind of infection is a tooth infection?

Don’t you just hate it when your tooth starts hurting for no apparent reason? It’s like, hello, I didn’t sign up for this kind of torture! Well guess what folks, that pain might just be due to a little infection. Don’t worry though, we’re here to break down all the deets on what kind of infection a tooth infection really is.

The Basics

So let’s start with the basics – what exactly is a tooth infection anyways? A tooth infection, also known as an abscessed tooth or dental abscess if you want to sound fancy pantsy, occurs when bacteria enters the innermost part of your tooth called the pulp. This leads to an accumulation of pus (yum) and causes inflammation in and around the affected area.

Symptoms and Signs

Some common symptoms and signs associated with a tooth infection are:

  • A throbbing or sharp pain in your teeth
  • Sensitivity while eating hot/cold foods or liquids
  • Swelling in your jaw/gums/face (maybe you should reconsider that double cheeseburger)
  • Fever
  • Bad breath (don’t be shy now)

When Does One Develop Tooth Abscesses?

Tooth infections can develop from cavities that have gone untreated over time. So FYI people: brushing twice daily is not optional! Cavities create small holes which allow outside substances (bacteria) easy access inside our teeth; leading directly to infestation (think rodent).

Also remember folks, trauma from injury can open up tissue-containing pockets allowing all manner of contaminants entry into ones lovely oral cavity. Thus resulting in one having tales/stories very unlikeable by other humans especially those whose vision go haywire at mention or sight of gooey stuff!

Types Of Dental Abscesses

There are two types of dental abscesses, a periapical abscess and periodontal abscess.

Periapical Abscess

A periapical abscess is caused by bacteria infecting the pulp of the tooth. This type of tooth infection can either be acute or chronic (like that ongoing drama).

  • An acute infection highlights rapid onset pain/puss/oedema – you might even look like an outsize squirrel in no time with one cheek larger than the other smirk.

  • A chronic situation show’s gradual destruction from months to years ultimately becoming noticeable in symptoms ,otherwise tagged smoldering infection! Not cool guys.Headshake

Periodontal Abscess

The other type of dental absess is called a periodontal abssess whereby, infection occurs when bacterias attack aeound gum area close to affected teeth.Periodonal disease may occur under several conditions such as plaque build-up, trauma or deep pockets between teeth which trap food debris among others .

Treatment Options

So what are our options at this point? Contrary to popular belief, ignoring it won’t make it better. Just like any other health issue you should consult your dentist about treatment as soon as possible.

Antibiotics

Antibiotics can be taken for infections where there has been spread beyond site of mere toothache.Orasone drugs would have immense, vital effects…killing off bacteria hiding inside and around crevices not visible to human eyes. But always check with your doctor, dentist before selecting an appropriate medication regime!

Root Canal Therapy

If antibiotics fail, maybe root canal therapy clinches deal. This implies total extractionof all infected tissue from within thus allowing promotion of clean start(happy days). At times, pain cannot hide behind nonchallance so waking up on right side means avoiding avoidable dents in ones oral compartments!

Keep smiling folks and remember: prevention is always better than cure. So brush up (pun intended) on your dental hygiene and don’t forget to visit your dentist regularly.
