Klor-Con® Extended-release Tablets are an electrolyte replenisher. The chemical name is potassium chloride, and the structural formula is KCl. Potassium chloride, USP is a white, granular powder or colorless crystals. It is odorless and has a saline taste. Its solutions are neutral to litmus.

What does Klor Con treat? KlorCon is used to prevent or to treat low blood levels of potassium (hypokalemia). Potassium levels can be low as a result of a disease or from taking certain medicines, or after a prolonged illness with diarrhea or vomiting.

What are the dangers of potassium chloride? Gastrointestinal Irritation. Overdosing on potassium chloride or ingesting high concentrations, like those used in ice melters or industrial applications, can cause gastrointestinal distress. According to its material safety data sheet, or MSDS, potassium chloride can cause irritation and vomiting.

What is the maximum dose for potassium chloride? -If serum potassium is 2.5 mEq/L or higher, rate should not exceed 10 mEq/hour, and manufacturers recommend that concentration not exceed 40 mEq/L. Maximum daily dose: 200 mEq. Comments: -Never give injectable potassium chloride undiluted. -The usual adult dietary intake is 50 to 100 mEq potassium per day.

  • For capsule, extended release products : Take as directed with a liquid and a meal. Take with 8 oz. liquid. Do not lie down for 10min. Swallow whole. Do not break/chew/crush/dissolve. Call Dr if heartburn, or swallowing/stomach pain.
  • For liquid products : Measure dose using a dosing spoon/cup/syringe.
  • For packet products : Mix into 4-8 oz water or juice and drink slowly. Best to take with food to lessen stomach upset. Take at the same time(s) daily as directed. Important to eat enough of a variety of foods.
  • For tablet, ext release, particles/crystals products : Do not chew or crush. OK to split tablet.
  • For tablet, extended release products : Do not chew or crush. OK to split tablet if scored.
