What is split personality disorder?

Are you sick and tired of being the same old boring person all the time? Wanting to switch things up a bit but can’t seem to find the way? Well, we’ve got some news for you! You might be suffering from what’s known as split personality disorder or DID – dissociative identity disorder. Don’t worry, it’s not as scary as it sounds (or maybe it is, depending on which persona you decide to bring out).

In this article, we’ll dive into what exactly split personality disorder is (hint: there are multiple ‘yous’ inside your head), its causes and symptoms, and how it can be treated.

Showtime – The Multiple Personalities

So picture this: You’re out at a party with friends when suddenly everyone notices that something weird is going on. Did someone spike the punch bowl? No my friend (although that would make for an interesting story) – It’s just one of your other personalities peaking through!

For those who are unaware, individuals diagnosed with DID tend to have more than one distinct identity residing within them (MMMs). These alternate personas may show themselves in various ways including changes in posture/voice pattern/writing style. Some identities often differentiate themselves by gender or age (hello Mrs Doubtfire) while others take on totally different behaviors & habits altogether (Elvis anyone?).

Cause Of The Problematic Separation

While our lives may seem chaotic sometimes IRL- nothing compares to the turmoil happening in our heads. Many researchers believe that traumatic experiences during childhood lead people down roadways toward developing split-personality disorders (nope its not because of looking too long in a clown costume mirror). This could include anything from severe physical abuse/neglect/sxual trauma/violent accidents/etc., causing significant levels of stress leading toward complete separation/fragmentation between the self as a primary coping mechanism.

But when it comes to actual diagnosis, not everything is readily and directly apparent because of A). Subconscious amnesia between states-hiding true cause, and B) lack of symptom recognition until energy becomes more pronounced over time.

Keeping Tabs – The Symptoms

Symptoms exhibited by individuals suffering from split personality disorder can vary widely. Here are some common ones:

  • Depersonalization
  • Depression
  • Anxiety attacks
  • Aggressive behaviors
  • Sudden physical illnesses (and they said hypochondria was bad…)

If any such symptoms persist throughout longer periods or go beyond normal comprehension needed to perform daily activities without much physical or mental affectation try seeing a professional right away.

Turning Tables – Diagnosing Split Personality Disorder

You thought having one identity crisis isn’t enough? Try multiples! But in all seriousness…how does one know when having an splitting personalities amounts to anything clinically significant?

Firstly, signs include loss of memory at intermittent points within the day/an inability to keep track of where experiences originate from with accuracy/possible auditory hallucinations during stressful times etc leading toward confusion (Who said you need drama & crime for thrill) . If these symptoms consistently occur across an unfixed timeline (yes that also includes those moments before falling asleep) consult with a certified therapist.

Mind Tricks – Treating DID

As with most mental health conditions, treatment involves some combo therapy including medication/talk:

Psychodynamic Therapy: One-on-one counseling sessions wherein patients engage in dialogue meant towards understanding the basis behind their condition.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): Using this type of therapy allows people to recognize how certain patterns of thinking could be worsening negative consequences. Much is placed upon analyzing maladaptive mindsets/habitual behavior and helping others develop better strategies for dealing tough emotions/difficult thoughts.

Medication sometimes gets thrown into mix here too like antidepressants/anxiolytics anything that might help individuals better manage symptoms so they can work with and adjust to life without stress/difficulty.

It’s Always Sunny on the Other Side

Having split personality disorder may seem daunting however it also provides refreshing insight into an individual’s unique inner workings. Multiple personalities allow for greater creativity/expression of emotions given their varying auras/personal traits (no one could ever accuse them of being boring) – this sense excitement often translates over into friends family members alike allowing them see another side via loved ones validation true belonging!

While it’s nothing to necessarily joke about, there are many ways professionals treat and cope with multiple personality disorders. Life can be quite unpredictable & stress provoking for everyone in different ways, but remember making different sides come together harmoniously only further demonstrates our ability as humans continue adapting/thriving even outside norms or sometimes living ideas altogether!
