What is narrow angle?
Narrow angle, also known as angle-closure glaucoma, is a condition that affects the eyes. It occurs when there isn’t enough space between the iris and cornea. As a result, fluid in your eye cannot circulate properly, leading to an increase in pressure.
Sounds scary right? Worry not! In this article, we’ll discuss all things narrow-angle and what you should look out for.
How does it work?
As previously mentioned, when there isn’t enough space between the iris and cornea in your eye, fluid can build up which leads to increased intraocular pressure (IOP). This can have severe consequences if left untreated. The reason why it’s called ‘angle closure’ because of how tight or narrow this area becomes; hence no drainage happening!
The drainage system, known as trabecular meshwork located at the small patch where these two areas meet sometimes blocks/flares up/malfunction/shut down – we’re trying to keep this simple – this doesn’t allow liquid from anywhere within the eyeball to escape correctly
If too much pressure builds up without any proper ways of release halo effect (seeing bright circles around lights) can ensue followed by fogginess/blurry vision/darkening of peripheral & central field/sudden onset ocular pain/sickness/vomiting/headaches – Yikes!
Early detection is essential since glaucoma has no cure but only prevention of progression available such as with lowering IOP through various means like drops/surgery/laser treatments.”
Who’s most vulnerable?
While anyone may develop anatomically predisposed narrower angles due genetic factors especially amongst those near descent along southeast Asians/i.e., Chinese/Filipino etc./ people over 60 years old are more susceptible compared only less than 0.5 percent younger folks developing disease otherwise tends to be rare popping around ages 40-60
Types of Narrow Angle Glaucoma
Two broad categories/known types –
- Primary angle-closure glaucoma
- Secondary angle-closure glaucoma
What Is Primary Angle-Closure Glaucoma?
It’s when the iris is naturally situated closer to the cornea entrance; sometimes, even a little shallower anterior chamber height can contribute to this as well if there is family history making an individual more vulnerable due genetics.
What Is Secondary Angle-Closure Glaucoma?
It’s when another underlying cause leads to iridocorneal contact from multiples reasons such inflammation/past surgery (cataract or eyelid)/trauma/growth(s) within same/surrounding ocular tissues/diseases like diabetes/cardiovascular etc., which may necessitate medical evaluation/monitoring by specialists.
Diagnosis & Treatment
People who are destined for narrow-angle trouble can have asymptomatic periods when treatment is not needed; some flares up may also appear just once requiring no intervention at all. Even in acute cases, after specialists make sure other diseases and secondary factors causing it ruled out, they will likely initiate measures that’ll reduce intraocular pressure with meds that help lower volume output/equipments/tools meant to relieve/decompress/blockage/trabeculotomy/etc/laser therapy as deemed appropriate – on top of overall patient management so don’t do anything without specialist’s guidance!
Meds used are usually local eye drops Alpha Agonists/Beta-blockersderivative pills eg Carbonic Anhydrase Inhibitors + Acetazolamide oral drugs when prescribed should be taken religiously following doctor-allocated timetables but before taking any always disclose other medication currently using and pre-existing conditions/discomfort brought by side effects(itchy/redness/plaque/sinus issues/gastrointestinal distress etc.)
Even surgical intervention does not promise resolution without the risk of relapse (only manage disease!) but procedures like trabeculectomy /cosmetic iridectomy exist.
Prevention
While we are exposed to vast amounts of stress and environmental factors, consulting eye specialists if any symptoms arise always recommended would save us better than engaging in hazardous tasks; ex: avoiding stimulants that raise blood pressure/B- blockers that decrease it/exercise or fast movements/lifestyle changes eating healthy diets full of fresh fruits + veggies
Conclusion!
In short, narrow angle is an ocular condition that requires watching out for few signals during their onset stages could spare us pain anxiety even worse blindness! Consulting experts even for moments appearing insignificant advised as only measures put presently contain a rise’s management & extent progression when severity should be kept under scrutiny. With this information openly available, knowing what to watch out for can be just what prevents irreparable harm from happening so stay safe, people!
