What is mild acidosis?
Welcome fellow humans! Today, we’re going to dive headfirst (not literally, unless that’s your thing) into the wonderful world of mild acidosis. Now, before you start panicking and running for the hills, let me assure you – this isn’t as scary or complicated as it might sound. In fact, I’m going to do my best to explain everything in simple terms that even your pet goldfish could understand.
What is Acidosis?
Acidosis refers to a condition where there is an imbalance between acids and bases in your body fluids. Normally, the pH level of blood lies between 7.35-7.45 which means its slightly alkaline. However if something upsets this delicate balance and causes acidity / low pH levels below 7.35 then you may experience serious health complications such as coma ,organ failure ailments etc.
You can think of acids and bases like a pair of feuding roommates who refuse to compromise on anything – they’re constantly at odds with each other over everything from whose turn it is to take out the trash to what temperature the thermostat should be set at.
In our bodies, you have two types of acidosis- Respiratory & Metabolic.
Respiratory-acidosis occurs when lungs cannot remove sufficient quantity CO2 while metabolic-acidosis ensues when there are excess metabolic by-products likelactic acid accumulation due to anaerobic cellular activity during physical exercise or uncontrolled diabetes
Alright But What Exactly Is “Mild” Acidosis?
Ah yes – now we’re getting down to business! So first things first: what exactly does “mild” mean in this context? Well folks, mild essentially means low grade, like when you get a mild cold that doesn’t knock you off your feet but still makes you feel lousy for a few days.
Similarly, when we talk about mild acidosis, we’re referring to a situation where the pH of your blood has only dropped slightly below the normal range. In other words, mild acidosis is like getting a mild scolding from your boss for being late to work – it’s not great, but it’s not likely to cause any major problems either.
Why Does Mild Acidosis Happen?
Great question! And lucky for you guys (and your pet goldfish), I’m here with an answer that won’t make your brain hurt. Essentially, there are two main reasons why mild acidosis might occur:
Not Enough Breathing
Remember how we talked about respiratory and metabolic acidosis earlier? Well in this case, mild acidosis can happen if you’re simply not breathing enough – which leads to too much CO2 accumulating in your blood.
Think of it like cooking pasta: if you don’t have enough water boiling away on the stove then chances are good that the pasta isn’t going to cook properly – or at all. Similarly, inadequate oxygen getting breathed into lungs leads up-to accumulation of CO2 ultimately leading up-to lung related diseases such as COPD /Asthma etc
Too Much Exercise
Okay so maybe exercise isn’t all bad…but hear me out on this one! When you engage in particularly strenuous physical activity (like running a marathon or doing one hundred burpees),your body switches over from relying primarily upon aerobic metabolism(Opportunity substrates)to anaerobicMetabolism ( whenever our body uses non-oxygen dependent energy system).Basically put,it means more lactic acids accumulation happens as byproduct when exercising slowly than regularly.Because breaking down glucose without useing oxygen creates large amounts of lactate usually metabolized by liver ,if supply outstrips demand its causes uptick in acidity level and decrease ph value thereby causing metabolic-acidosis.
I know, I know – it seems counterintuitive that exercise could do something unhealthful like make your blood more acidic. But the good news is that as long you take regular breaks and give yourself time to recover in-between workouts, you should never have to worry about mild acidosis And if you are diagnosed with this condition already , its better to use some supplement or snacks which can normalize ph level such as Sodium Bicarbonate,Pickle Juice etc .
What Are The Symptoms of Mild Acidosis?
Now, onto the important stuff! How will you know if you’re dealing with mild acidosis? Well for starters, don’t fret too much because usually symptoms are rare and mild unless pH values drops drastically. That being said,it’s still a good idea to keep an eye out for:
- Fatigue : Consider drinking fluids rich in electrolytes so as to tackle lethargy from acid-base disturbance.
- Headaches: Its common for people experiencing headache due to Rapid rise of cortisol levels
- Irregular heartbeats or palpitations
- Hyperventilation(for respiratory acidosis)or Slow respiration(in some cases)
In fact Many individuals might not even notice any issues at all since their body does a remarkable job of taking care itself.
How Do You Treat Mild Acidosis?
Let me answer your question another way:Treatments vary based on severity
That’s right – depending on how serious your case is ,the treatment plans can vary considerably
For instances where respiratory-acid-base imbalance occuring when our lungs fail ti remove CO2 effectively,Solutions include various breathing exercises(like belly breathing),maintaing proper ventilation by using ventilators sometimes oxygen mask may be needed [1].
Another great remedy primarily used in sports setting/former Military personnel who carry PASKIT kits during training sessions or operations includes administrationof intravenous bicarbonate( or any other alkali non-toxic buffer agents) to deal with metabolic acidosis so it works as a buffer agent neutralizing significance amount of excess protons/acid thereby raising our neutral pH level[2].
In more severe cases, medical intervention, intubation may become around
to assist the patient’s breathing while the underlying cause is addressed. In end-stage patients ,kidney dialysis will be recommended by specialists.
Can You Prevent Mild Acidosis?
The good news is that prevention’s not just possible but also pretty easy. Here are some steps you can take right now to keep mild acidosis at bay:
- Stay hydrated, don’t forget your water bottle.Always Opt plenty of fluids filled with vitamin c, amino acids, eggs and meats rich in calcium, magnesium etc, prevents dehydration & energy drainage
- Sanitize your food.Take regular meals full with green leafy vegetables, tomatoes carrying vital minerals reduces spikes in acidity levels
- Wear proper safety gear-While engaging in extreme workouts.
- Avoid ingestion highly acidic foods like citrus fruits, cold drinks, soda, pickles which tend grab essential Ca,Mg molecules from blood stream binding them so get eliminated through urine rather than playing required role therefore increase our body’s net negative load towards acidic side
And there we have it folks – I hope this article has helped shed some light (like a lighthouse on a dark night) on what exactly “mild acidosis” means and how best to handle it. Remember, you’re never alone when dealing with health issues and options always exist for restoring homeostasis(happy equilibrium).Take care 🙂
