We all have that one friend who thinks they know everything about weight loss. They’ll tell you to drink apple cider vinegar, eat only grapefruit, or even try a crazy diet of lemon juice and cayenne pepper (okay, maybe not that extreme). But what if I told you there was a natural ingredient out there that could actually help with weight loss? Enter hydroxycitric acid (HCA) found in garcinia cambogia.
What Exactly is Garcinia Cambogia?
Garcinia cambogia is a small fruit native to Indonesia, India, and parts of Southeast Asia. It looks like a miniature pumpkin and has been used for centuries in traditional medicine to treat various ailments including digestive issues and joint pain. Recently it’s gained popularity as an aid for weight loss thanks to the active ingredient HCA.
How Does HCA Work?
HCA works by blocking an enzyme called citrate lyase which plays a key role in converting carbohydrates into fat cells. By blocking this enzyme, HCA can help prevent excess carbs from turning into stored fat making them available for energy instead.
In addition to inhibiting citrate lyase activity, research suggests HCA may also suppress appetite by increasing levels of serotonin – known as the “feel-good” hormone responsible for regulating mood and appetite control.
But before you go buying up all the garcinia cambogia supplements you can find at your local health food store – let’s dive deeper into the research on how effective HCA really is for weight loss.
The Research: Does HCA Actually Work?
The studies investigating the potential benefits of using HCA supplements are mixed – some studies show promising results while others don’t show any significant effect compared to placebo groups. It’s important to note that dietary supplements aren’t regulated by the FDA like prescription medications which means manufacturers aren’t required to prove their safety, efficacy or quality before they’re sold.
However, that doesn’t mean there isn’t evidence to support the use of HCA for weight loss. According to a 2005 meta-analysis of several studies examining HCA’s effects on weight loss HCA was found to significantly reduce body weight and BMI in a majority of cases compared with placebo.
Another 2018 study published in the Journal of Dietary Supplements looked at the effects of supplementing with either a high dose (n=61) or low dose (n=60) glucosamine-HCL/chondroitin sulfate/Quercetin dietary supplement enriched with chromium picolinate, Capsaicinoids, Citrus aurantium extract standardized for synephrine and caffeine anhydrous combined with GARCINIA CAMBOGIA containing only (-)-Hydroxycitric acid calcium salt (HCA-SX; Super CitriMax®). The results showed both groups lost significant amounts of total body fat – but interestingly enough researchers noted the group taking the higher dosage HAD LESS overall reduction in fat mass compared to those taking lower doses.
What About Safety?
As is often case when it comes to supplements- more research is needed regarding long-term safety risks associated with consuming high dosages over extended periods. That being said plenty of clinical trials have been conducted assessing up-to 2.8 grams daily/safe daily intake ranges- without showing any toxic effect.
One thing some people experience when using garcinia cambogia is digestive upset including nausea & abdominal pain similar side-effects experienced when consuming other food-type additives/excess consumption levels like sugar alcohols while others do not encounter any issues whatsoever therefore minor gastrointestinal problems seems like possible adverse events rather than serious ones
There’s also concern about potential drug interactions since some animal studies suggest HCA may interact with certain medications like cholesterol-lowering statins. Individuals on these type of drugs should consult their physician before starting HCA supplementation.
How to Find a Quality Garcinia Cambogia Supplement
When it comes to shopping for garcinia cambogia supplements, quality and ingredients matter more than ever since the supplement industry is plagued by companies selling ineffective products or worse- misrepresenting what’s actually in them.
Here are some things you might want to look when purchasing:
Choose a supplement that contains at least 50% HCA – this concentration has been shown effective in several clinical trials.
Make sure the product doesn’t have any fillers, additives or additional stimulants that could potentially cause side effects or reduce efficacy of active ingredients
Check that the label specifically identifies “garcinia cambogia” as the source material used and “Standardized Extract” -meaning-it will provide a consistent & reliable concentration/ amount from one batch to another
By following these guidelines- You’ll be much more likely to find an effective garinicia cabmgoiua suplemetn worth taking!
The Bottom Line: Does It Live Up To The Hype?
While research into its effectiveness hasn’t led experts caliming its an all-encompassing solution/treatment- there is some evidence suggesting consuming Hydroxycitric acid can produce weight loss benefits when incorporated into an overall healthy diet/exercise routine
That being said.. your best bet for long-term success still lies within making lifestyle changes such us largely plant-based whole foods diets ex-protein rich legumes, nuts/seeds serving form lean animal products limited added sugars combined with moderate physical activity
Hoping fingers-crossed on (lol) gettin involved with hca/supplementation alone producing instant/miraculous results >>> wouldn’t quite ring true YET-incorporating long-term changes that will lead to YOU-feeling/beinge-healthier, pounds BECOMING LONG TERM achievements instead.
