What is good for eyesight?
We all want to have perfect eyesight, but sometimes we take our vision for granted. As we age, our eyes may develop problems that hinder our visual abilities. However, there are ways to improve and maintain good eyesight. Whether you’re nearsighted or farsighted, here are some tips that can help keep your eyes healthy.
The Importance of having Good Eyesight
Having a clear vision allows us to see the world around us in vivid detail. We need it to do daily activities like driving or reading a book. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 1 billion people worldwide have preventable sight loss due to cataracts, glaucoma and other eye conditions.
But what if I told you there are things you can do that could potentially avoid or slow down these issues? Let’s dive into some practical solutions!
Foods That Help with Eye Health
As they say – You Are What You Eat! Our diet plays an essential role in keeping our body functions optimal including our vision:
- Carrots: Yes yes! We heard this plenty of times since kindergarten – “eat carrots it helps with your vision”. Carrots contain beta carotene which converts in Vitamin A responsible for preventing night blindness.
- Spinach: One of Popey’s favorites contains lutein & zeaxanthin pigment providing antioxidant protection against both ultraviolet radiation from sunlight and harmful blue light rays.
- Salmon: An excellent source for Omega-3 fatty acids protecting power against dry-eye syndrome helps reduce macular degeneration risk.
Other foods known beneficial antioxidants include orange peppers , green tea , dark chocolate ; Now don’t go overeating candies though(Laughs)
Home Exercises
Just like maintaining physical health through exercising regularly is beneficial similarly doing specific exercises can benefit eye muscles improving overall wellness.
Here is where these cartoonish sounding workouts come in –
-
Eye rotations: rotate your eyes mildly without moving the neck for about 30 seconds each side before or after bed. Could imagine yourself like a juggling clown doing this.
-
Palming: Rub your palms together, and place them over the eyelids relaxing muscles for 5 minutes as visual imagination; Imagine lying on a beach sipping Pina Colada’s.
Avoid Eye Strain
We all have compulsive screen browsing habits that we can’t shake off: smartphones, laptops, tablets or gaming devices – Oh! you know ’em well – they emit damaging blue light rays; causing digital eye strain leading to blurry vision , headaches , dryness & redness .
Here are ways to prevent it –
- Blink more frequently!
- Keep distance away from screens (16 inches)
- Take break intervals(20/20/20 Rule): every 20 mins look away at something distant such as a cloud formation out window for at least 20 secs.
But how many of us actually follow these guidelines? The best way is incorporating short breaks between long screentime sessions trying different accessories such as anti glare/clear glasses, phone overlays with diminishing blue light exposure.
Sleep & Relaxation
Not much explanation needed here! Having enough sleep enormously impacts overall eyesight health by recharging it resting tired eye muscles reducing risks of twitching & sagging while also avoiding increased pressure within them.
Some tips for better sleep-
- Try using blinds blocking out unwanted internal/outside light sources affecting melatonin levels during reboot mode.
- Practice relaxation techniques (yoga , meditation)
Conclusion
Just like any other part of our body our eyes need attention too! A little proactive care goes a long way maintaining good vision against possible future concerns. From diet choices to exercises finally ending up with good night sleep; small efforts go a long way in preventing notable eye diseases from occurring especially at older age.
Hope these tips benefit the glassed up out there!
