What is fetoprotein?

You may have heard the term “fetoprotein” thrown around in conversations about pregnancy or cancer diagnoses, but do you really know what it means? Fear not, my curious friend! In this article, we’ll delve into the world of fetoproteins and explore their role in our bodies.

First Things First: What Are Proteins?

Before we can even begin to talk about fetoproteins specifically, we need to take a step back and discuss proteins in general. I promise to make it quick and painless!

Proteins are complex molecules made up of long chains of amino acids. These chains fold into unique shapes that determine their function within the body. Different types of proteins play countless roles throughout our bodies – from facilitating chemical reactions to providing structure for tissues.

The Lowdown on Fetoproteins

Fetoproteins (AFP) are a type of protein produced during fetal development by the liver and yolk sac. They get their name because they’re found at high levels in the blood of developing fetuses.

Normally, after birth AFP production decreases rapidly until only trace amounts remain circulating in adults’ bloodstreams. However, certain conditions such as liver damage or cancer can cause AFP levels to rise again

So how exactly do medical professionals use these elevated levels of AFP? Let’s explore some common applications.

Diagnosing Neural Tube Defects

During early pregnancy, neural tube defects can develop due to incomplete closing or forming of an embryo’s neural tube – which eventually becomes a baby’s spinal cord and brain.’ Thankfully however,’ maternal serum screening tests using AFP done early pregnancy can indicate whether there might be any birth defects with accuracy as high as 80% depending on other factors.1

High levels aren’t typically present unless there is an issue with neural development so if there are elevated levels detected, additional tests such as ultrasound will be recommended.

Monitoring Cancer Treatments

As mentioned earlier,’ cancers can cause elevated AFP levels.’ When treating liver cancer, AFP levels can be monitored to determine whether a treatment regimen is working or whether the cancer has returned after remission

For example,’ suppose you’re undergoing chemotherapy for liver cancer that had initially caused high AFP level results. In that case during treatment if monitor levels of RNA fragments in your blood test showing proper tumor gene expression compared with established reference ranges used by scientists then this data would combined make possible more informed decisions for treatments down the road’2

Diagnosing Liver Diseases

The liver is top-notch at producing and secreting certain substances into bodily fluids which includes fetoproteins’ through normal physiological process,3 but certain diseases like hepatitis B or C, cirrhosis of the liver can prevent it from maintaining its function properly.4

Elevated blood serum concentrations (over 10 ng/mL) may indicate alcoholic cirrhosis whereas values above 500 ng/mL suggest hepatocellular carcinoma identification viability.5
