What is adequan?

Adequan belongs to a class of drugs called Disease Modifying Osteoarthritis

Inflammation of one or more joints.

Drugs (DMOAD). It is the only FDA-approved product of its type, and has been clinically shown to help treat arthritis while simultaneously relieving joint pain. Adequan is a prescription medication that can only be dispensed and administered by a licensed veterinarian.

What do you use as a generic Adequan? Polysulfated glycosaminoglycan (PSGAG), sold under the brand name Adequan, is an injectable drug for dogs and horses that is used to alleviate the lameness, pain, and lowered range of motion caused by arthritis. It is made of repeat disaccharide units (comprising hexosamine and hexuronic acid ), and is similar to glycosaminoglycans already present in the cartilage; PSAG thus easily integrates itself there.

How long does Adequan last? With Adequan you should see signs of improvement within four weeks. The medication is generally given twice weekly for 4 weeks, then once weekly for 4 weeks, then every other week for 6 weeks, and then every 3 to 4 weeks long term.

Does Adequan Canine Work? Currently, Adequan is only FDA-approved for dogs and horses, though some vets do prescribe it for cats as well. Adequan helps relieve the pain of arthritis by soothing and lubricating the inflamed joint in addition to stimulating joint cartilage repair. Simply put, it helps your dog’s body heal and prevent further deterioration of your pets’ joints.

Is Adequan canine available in the UK? I have done some checking and as far as I can tell, Adequan Canine is available in the UK. It is made by Luitpold and distributed to veterinarians to be given by veterinarians. This will help your girls by stimulating cartilage repair process and inhibiting further cartilage damage, It will also work to increase the lubrication to the joints and decrease inflammation.

Is there a generic form of Adequan for horses?

Is there a generic form of Adequan for horses? Horse: Striker, 19 y/o Bay QH, Grandson of Bunny McKay. 4 time NSCA National Champion in sport of OMOKSEE (patterned horse racing). From what I understand, there is no generic form of adequan for equine use.

What kind of preservative is Adequan im 100 mg? Each mL contains Polysulfated Glycosaminoglycan 100 mg, Benzyl Alcohol 0.9% v/v as a preservative, and Water for Injection q.s. Sodium Hydroxide and/or Hydrochloric Acid added when necessary to adjust pH. Polysulfated Glycosaminoglycan is chemically similar to the glycosaminoglycans in articular cartilage matrix.

Can you mix Adequan multi dose with other drugs? The injection site must be thoroughly cleansed prior to injection. Do not mix Adequan ® i.m. Multi-Dose with other drugs or solvents. There are no known contraindications to the use of intramuscular Polysulfated Glycosaminoglycan.

Is it safe to give Adequan to humans? Do not use in horses intended for human consumption. Not for use in humans. Keep this and all medications out of the reach of children. The safe use of Adequan ® i.m. Multi-Dose in horses used for breeding purposes, during pregnancy, or in lactating mares has not been evaluated.
