    Is Abatacept a biologic? Orencia (abatacept) is a biologic drug approved for the treatment of moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis. It is also used to treat psoriatic arthritis and moderate to severe juvenile idiopathic arthritis.

    How does Abatacept work? Abatacept works by inhibiting T cells. T cells are a type of white blood cell (leukocytes) that play an important role in the immune system. Abatacept seems to prevent T cells from being active and multiplying too much.

    Was this helpful?What kind of drug is abatacept and what are the side effects? Abatacept, trade name Orencia, is a type of drug called a biological therapy. It targets the cause of your inflammation and reduces the activity of your immune system.

    What kind of arthritis can Abatacept be used for? What is Abatacept (Orencia®)? Abatacept is approved for adults with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), adults with psoriatic arthritis, and children 2 years of age and older with polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis. Abatacept reduces the signs and symptoms of these diseases, such as joint swelling, pain, and fatigue.

    How old do you have to be to take Abatacept? Abatacept is used to treat symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, and to prevent joint damage caused by these conditions. abatacept is for adults and children at least 2 years old. Abatacept is also used to treat active psoriatic arthritis in adults. Abatacept is not a cure for any autoimmune disorder and will only treat the symptoms of your condition.

    Can you take methotrexate while taking Abatacept? Many patients need to continue another oral medication for RA, like methotrexate or plaquenil, while on abatacept, and should continue to take this if advised to do so by their doctor. Never take Abatacept with any TNF blocker such as Humira®, Enbrel®, or Remicade®, or any other biologic medication used to treat RA.
