What is a chitosan?

Have you ever heard of chitosan? No? Well, it’s not surprising since it’s not something that usually gets brought up in casual conversation. But today, my dear friend, we are going to change that. We will be diving headfirst into the world of chitosan and hopefully come out the other side with a newfound appreciation for this fascinating substance.

What Exactly is Chitosan?

To put it simply, chitosan is a natural polymer derived from chitin. Now I know what you’re thinking – “What in the world is chitin?” You see, chitin happens to be one of the most abundant polysaccharides (a fancy name for carbohydrates) found in nature. It can be found everywhere from crustaceans like lobsters and crabs to insects like beetles and butterflies.

So why do we care about this weird-sounding substance anyways? Well as it turns out, when you deacetylate (which means remove acetyl groups) chitin through various chemical processes you end up with chitosan!

Say Hello To Our New Friend: Acetyl Groups

Now I’m sure some of you might be wondering what these acetyl groups even are so let me break it down for ya. Acetyl groups refer to small molecules made up of carbon atoms which attach themselves to certain parts of larger molecules such as proteins or carbs (like our good friend chitin).

These little buggers can play quite an important role when it comes biological processes they help keep things stable by acting like tiny puzzle pieces fitting perfectly together.

The Many Applications Of Chitosan

Now that we’ve got all that science stuff covered let’s talk about how chitosans actually used! Although its use ranges far beyond just being pure fun /s here are some potential uses:

  1. Wound healing – It has been said that due to chitosan’s antibacterial properties it can be useful in speeding up the healing process of wounds.

  2. Weight Loss- If you’re looking for a new way to lose those pesky extra pounds then perhaps turning to good old chitosan could help block fat absorption

  3. Water filtration – Chitosan turns out super great at grabbing heavy metals from water sources before they end up in our drinking materials or environment!

Now let’s dive into these applications just a touch deeper because really who doesn’t love some meaty application talk?

Wound Healing Yay!

Ok, so maybe ‘Yay!’ isn’t exactly the reaction one would expect when talking about wound care, but all things considered Chitin and the subsequent creation of chitosans are very interesting scientifically speaking… like me you may have played pretend nurse as a kid odd /s.

Studies have shown that solutions containing chitosan appear to encourage blood clotting which is never a bad thing right?? As we start losing more and more platelets instead move on over there buddy come back home. This ultimately speeds up the repair process of skin tissue leading me to conclude hypthothetically if an ambulane happens upon an accident site almost bringing with them pure unadulterated powdered chitisan (somebody send this idea off for Shark Tank) someone will get pretty fast treatment.

The Magical Bacon Blocker aka The Weigh Loss Power Of Chitin

If we’re being real here there aren’t any magic bullets when it comes weight loss and getting healthy habits down.. well until now ha ha jk JK. That being said however I cannot deny thatchitins make their grand appearance once again!!

Chances are high that …damn bacon always taste worth it ugh FOMO). A research team found evidence seems to suggest that chitosan possibly interfering with the way our bodies usually handle fat. In theory, we could ingest chitosan in supplement form and it would work to trap certain fatty contents before they can be absorbed while being digested …. maybe this is a new weight loss ‘miracle’! One could only hope.

Water Filtration Awesomeness

^(Let me go ahead and preface here for your information if you’re into verbose but thorough scientific explanations then scroll down /s.)

On that note, let’s talk about something especially interesting water filtration anyone? Heavy metal content getting in drinking water has become an increasingly pressing concern across much of the globe. Imagine ridding such substances traces like mercury or lead from waters sources by using modified chitosans . Not only does the substance act as a great filter medium overall but no harmful added ingredients needed!

Some Quick Science Stuff Explaining How The Magic Happens

When metals get caught up within a chitin-like structure (aka Chitin bead) there are many negatively charged atoms have been created via deprotonation processes taking place on amine groups upon molecule’s surface – pretty neat huh.The substances being filtered typically bear positive charges giving us easy targets termed..cations sweet name right?. When those are close to those negative atoms on the surface…huzzah!! They stick together creating one big happy clump which eventually removes them altogether.

Additional (Potentially) Cool Uses Of Chitosan

We’ve discussed some practices above but did you know there other potential applications according to research :

  • Using chitins can help reduce microbial contamination leading to more extended shelve life when applied correctly which may aid food packaging companies

  • A team of scientists also showed promising results testing out modifiers when combined with cornstarch films making it possible produce biodegradable plastics

Now I don’t know about you, but any substance capable of producing biodegradable plastics can never hurt! Fingers crossed we get to see some amazing developments

A Final Thought On Chitosan

By now, dear reader, I hope that you’ve been a bit convinced that chitosans are pretty darn cool. From its natural derivation to its wide range of potential uses, there’s no denying this polysaccharide deserves more attention than it usually gets.

Let us bask in the knowledge of this weird and wonderful world as though chitosan is our own personal… scientific tamagotchi? Regardless one fact remains true – chemistry is truly magical (or something like it)!
