What is a bc implant?

Alright folks, buckle up and get ready for the ride of your life because today we’re going to be talking about one thing that can change your life forever. No, I’m not talking about finding a long-lost relative who happens to be a millionaire (although that would be pretty great). I’m talking about BC implants.

The Basics

So what exactly is a BC implant? Well, it’s basically a small device that gets inserted into your arm (yes, you read that right) which releases hormones into your body in order to prevent pregnancy (yep, no babies here!)

But how does it work?

Glad you asked! Think of it like this: the hormones released by the implant thicken cervical mucus and prevent ovulation from occurring (sometimes science really comes through with amazing inventions).

Types of Implants

Now there are two main types of BC implants out there:

  1. Nexplanon
  2. Norplant

Nexplanon

First up on our list we have Nexplanon. This little guy is a single rod that gets inserted just under the skin in your upper arm.

How long does it last?

Nexplanon lasts for around 3 years before needing to be replaced (which gives you plenty of time to plan out any potential baby-making if desired).

Norplant

Next on our list we have Norplant (cue dramatic music). Unlike Nexplanon which has just one rod insertion point, Norplant actually consists of six small rods which are all placed just under the skin in your upper arm (kinda makes me think of Edward Scissorhands but way less scary).

How long does it last?

Norplant lasts for five whole years before requiring replacement(we’re talkin’ ultimate peace-of-mind here folks).

How effective are They?

Now this is the million-dollar question (or actually, quite a bit less than that now that these babies are covered by most insurance companies).

Nexplanon Effectiveness

Nexplanon has a success rate of over 99 percent (heck yes!). It’s important to keep in mind though, just like with any other form of birth control, it’s effectiveness can be slightly reduced if you miss getting it replaced on time.

Norplant Effectiveness

Norplant is also over 99 percent effective (double heck yes!), however since there are six rods involved here instead of one like with the Nexplanon you do want to make sure they’re all still in place in order for maximum effectiveness(seems reasonable enough).

Side-Effects

Now I know what you’re thinking: “This all sounds amazing but what about potential side-effects?” Well friend, don’t worry because we’re going to cover those as well.

Common Side-Effects

Some common side effects seen with BC implants include:

  1. Changes in menstruation patterns
  2. Acne
  3. Weight gain or loss
  4. Mood changes such as depression or anxiety

Menstrual Changes

For menstrual pattern changes specifically these can range from lighter periods to having no period at all which may sound too good to be true but remember folks, science is awesome!

Acne Woes

For acne related issues women have reported both an increase and decrease in breakouts due to their BC implant so mileage may vary on this particular issue.

The Scale Shifts

Weight-related concerns seem pretty hit-or-miss too with some women experiencing weight loss while others experience weight gain which might put a damper on things mentally (..but hey gotta stay positive!)

Serious Side Effects

It’s always important when considering any medication or procedure not only talk through your options openly and honestly with your doctor but alert them if you experience any serious side effects listed below:

  1. Blood clots
  2. Breast cancer

Blood Clots

The FDA does list blood clots as a possible concern when it comes to BC implants however the overall risk is still low- that said every woman’s body is unique and different so still important to be aware.

Breast Cancer

Breast cancer has also been reported by some women with BC implants prompting further studies on this particular issue (yep, science always learning and growing heavier…I mean better!)

Conclusion

Overall BC Implants are an amazing invention for those looking into long term birth control options. Always do your research thoroughly in consultation with your doctor, personally I think getting one at least deserves some kind of gold star or extra dessert afterwards (fist bump for all my fellow implant having gals out there!)
