What hormones are in the pill?

If there’s one thing women have heard about until we’re blue in the ovaries, it’s “the pill”. This tiny tablet has been hailed as a miracle drug to prevent pregnancy, manage acne and Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), and even regulate menstrual cycles. But what exactly is “the pill”, and how does it work?

We’re going to dive deep into this hormonal abyss with our scuba gear made of strong scientific facts- which we will mold into a funny tone so that you won’t snooze off! Let’s take an exciting journey through ovary-land.

The Introduction

The birth control pill contains hormones – big surprise. But…what hormones? Most contraceptive pills are categorized by two specific types: Combination pills or Progestin-only pills.

Combination Pills

Combination pills get their name from containing both estrogens as well as progestins, making them a double dose of fun! They come in varying colors according to the hormone content for each week

Now don’t get confused with combination locks because putting your fingers on these combinations can bring you pleasant surprises!

Two examples of combination contraceptives include Yaz®, Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo®, and Marvelon®.

Progestin-Only Pills

Progestin-only (“mini”) pills do not contain estrogen but only synthetic progesterone (progestins). As a mini-me version they may be less effective compared to combination ones…

Some common brands of progestin-only contraceptives include Micronor®, Camila®, Errin® and other names like PSHH also known simply but strangely sounding lonesome as POPs (progesitin Only Pills).

Table 1 :Comparison Between Types
Category Hormone components Colors Advantages
Combination Pills (COCP) Estrogen and Progestin – Green-White, Yellow & Pink -Red – Helps with acne regulation
-Helps regulate menstrual cycles
-Less breakthrough bleeding compared to progestin only pills
Progestin-only pills(POPS) or Mini Pill Only synthetic progesterone(progestins) -None. Only come in white -Safe for women who can not take estrogen due to predisposition of blood related issues.
-Can be used while breastfeeding

Hormones that help prevent pregnancy

As mentioned earlier combination pills contain two hormones; estrogen and progestin.

Establishing Dominance: Estrogen and Progesterone

Estrogen is produced by the ovaries (not to be confused with the overall human ‘ovary’ they’re very hardworking ). It dominates during two periods of a woman’s life: During puberty, it regulates and develops secondary sex characteristics such as breast growth, pubic hair growth etc. Then comes adolescence where girls collect stuff like stickers or emotions sometimes seen too as”boyfriends”/ GIRLFRIENDS (!!!). While in this phase their ovaries start producing estrogen along with other hormonal gifts inside those colorful boxes.

Progesterone enters at different stages of ovulation bringing new surprises for anorexic people especially when unnecessary weight gain happens every month! Both these hormones play important roles in the female reproductive cycle. They work together like couples on Dancing With The Stars minus tantrums . When there is no mate present on a dance floor(ruptured follicle), they samba together until another team earns immunity from being eliminated(.i.e implantation occurs)

Taking Charge: Birth Control Pills giveth..But also taketh away:

If you take birth control pills regularly, the high doses of estrogen and progestin help regulate menstrual periods. In a normal menstrual cycle, hormone levels rise and fall in accordance with ovulation etc. However taking combination or even progestin-only pills simulates other changes to hormonal timekeeping which hamper their ability to fertilize an egg.. Lucky sperm!

Sidebar 1: Hormonal Activity during Menstrual Cycle
Day Hormonal Activities
5-15 Woman’s body prepares for possible pregnancy by thickening lining of the uterus due to low estrogen level
-In parallel, pituitary gland secretes FSH (Follicle-Stimulating Hormones).
-Ovaries prepare follicles for developing egg.

(Too many things happen here that’s why it made more sense as table)

11-16(approx.) Ovum matures under dome structure called ‘follicle’.
(While saying this I imagine little legs on them)
14(AVg) Days before next period starts(Estimated Ovulation Date) An increase in luteinizing hormones triggers rupture of matured egg from follicular throne cutting off communication between motherland ovaries and baby crib(fallopian tube) making it eligible for immaculate fertilization.
## Pill effectiveness

When taken at regular intervals over longer timespans without missing intakes; Birth Control Pills are typically >95% effective regardless of type(be sure not put your trust too much into fate now).

Effective Dosages

With combination contraceptives containing estrogen overdose NO ONE intentionally reaches such limits. Instead tabs have varying concentrations directed towards the exact purpose needed.

Fortunately most tablets come labeled accordingly but if you’re uncertain about anything always remember Google is free! On ‘the pill’, you typically take one tablet a day for 21 days and then have 7 pill-free days to allow withdrawal bleeding (period).

Conclusion

In summary, ‘the pill’ has done wonders as a contraceptive solution- from regulating menstrual cycles, acne management to being an option when blood related complications restrain taking estrogen. The various hormonal combinations involved help prevent contraception alongside their other methods of giving women a general sense of direction in hormonal assessments.

Sidebar 2: Environmental Consequences

Birth control pills do well inside our bodies; outside however..not that much! Hormones released into water via sewage systems leading to abnormal developments in fish such as male organs developing within female body leading up to extinction…creepy right?
