What helps feeling sick?

We’ve all been there. One moment, you feel as healthy and happy as a little hummingbird—then suddenly, you’re down for the count with a case of ‘I-feel-like-deathitis.’ Whether it’s that pesky flu bug or something less obvious like simple dehydration or an emotional funk, feeling sick can make life miserable. But not to worry—we’ve got some tips and tricks up our sleeves (and in our medicine cabinets) to help get you back on your feet!

Drink Up

One of the most important things you can do when you’re feeling sick? Stay hydrated! Drinking lots of fluids helps flush out toxins from your body, making it more difficult for any unwelcome visitors (bacteria or viruses) to take hold.

Water & Electrolytes

When we say “fluids,” we mostly mean water—fresh, pure H2O. But depending on what ails ya’, other liquids might be helpful too: sports drinks with added sodium and potassium (which help replenish electrolytes), tea with honey (for sore throats), broth-based soups (easy to digest), or even flat cola (yes, seriously—it contains sugar which is energizing [if consumed in reasonable amounts] and fluid). Hydration isn’t just about drinking; it’s also about avoiding things that dehydrate us—that includes alcohol [1], sugary soda pop[2] , caffeine[3], spicy food[4]…you get the idea.

Herbal Teas

Tea lovers rejoice! There are plenty of herbal teas that can lend assistance when battling colds, flus – basically anything that makes one feel like crap! Peppermint tea is good for settling irritated stomachs,[5] chamomile tea has soothing qualities,[6] lemon-ginger softens coughing,[7] lavender, a natural sedative,[8] is best for restless nights, while turmeric tea has anti-inflammatory properties.[9]

The Good Ole’ Chicken Noodle Soup

The healing power of chicken noodle soup knows no bounds. Research suggests that the combination of hot broth, soft vegetables, and lean protein in chicken soup may slow down the upper respiratory infection-boosting white blood cells[10] .If you love to cook, try making a homemade version with bone broth for an extra dose of nutrition.

Rest & Relaxation (R&R)

When you’re not 100% yourself, it’s important to give your body time to heal. Rest is generally considered key when our defenses are lowered; therefore taking naps can be beneficial[11]. It allows us take our mind off what’s going on within us and repair both physiologically and mentally. And when we say rest we mean physical, psychological and social recuperation or “time-out”. A period away from work or normal routine gives emotional distance which helps manage stress [12]. To help induce relaxation: read a book [after all TV isn’t anything good] , practice yoga, meditate or simply do something easy that brings joy like watching funny cat videos.

Medications & Supplements

Sometimes OTC medications might be in order – but ensure they contain the active ingredient(s) necessary for treating your specific symptoms if possible as some drugs do more harm than good especially if you have underlying conditions such kidney or liver disorders18. However,[19] there are things like vitamins and supplements that could turn out helpful though rather pricy – check first with a pharmacist or doctor before any new addition to medication therapy.
Omega3 faddery: Omega 3 fatty acids have proven helpful in reducing inflammation throughout the body so they can potentially reduce incidence rates [20].

Zinc

If used early enough Zinc has antiviral properties[21]. However, taking it too often or in excess of 40mg per day for long periods can be uncomfortable and even dangerous by mainly destroying copper thus resulting to anemia[22].

Vitamin C

a well-known antioxidant plays important role in many aspects of the immune system [23]. Though high supplementation does not necessarily prevent common colds while zeroing on the diversity impacts that vitamin C could have with various populations should be considered as you take these supplements.

Echinacea

Echinacea adds support for respiratory ailments like coughs and bronchitis as it has natural anti-inflammatory  effects [24][25] .

Full-Fledged Exposure Therapy

Hitting a gym when feeling miserable is probably terrible suggestion. But getting up into fresh air and sunshine is strongly encouraged against bad feelings hadit signals two good things: fresh oxygen intake from outside, which believe it or not actually affects how we think43 . Integrating environmental interventions may simply mean fortifying previously cognitive tough exercise routines such simple cycling distances daily – this alone boosts our moods substantially.

To wrap things up – feeling sick scares us all BUT at least you know there are numerous ways through which you can overcome your illness in safely yet humorously! So laugh away boxsets are always there 😉
