This emergency contraceptive pill (ECP), also known as the morning-after pill, can prevent ovulation from occurring after unprotected sex or failed contraception. But what exactly happens when you take Plan B? Let’s break it down.

What Is Plan B?

Let’s start by talking about what Plan B actually is before we discuss how it works scientifically. In simple terms, it contains levonorgestrel, which is a synthetic hormone. It works by preventing implantation of fertilized eggs into the uterus lining – basically stopping an unwanted pregnancy before it begins.

It’s important to note that Plan B doesn’t terminate an existing pregnancy: it only helps avoid one from occurring for up to 72 hours post intercourse.

How Does Plan b Work?

Here are two things you need to keep in mind: timing and dosage -the two essential elements of taking plan b successfully.

  • Timing:

To be effective, people must take the full dose as soon as possible after unprotected intercourse/contrceptive failure — ideally within twelve hours but no later than 3 days after….Do I even need to say more…fingers crossed!!

  • Dosage:

The standard doses include Levonorgestrel tablet (1.5 mg) taken as a single dose via oral administration

When swallowed correctly (in other words, you didn’t hurl right away), levonorgestrel thickens mucus cervical mucus and stops ovulation for approximatley five fucking days.

Just in case you’re wondering, the hormone is out of your system within 7-8 days after taking it.
