What happens when you feel dizzy?
Dizziness is one of those things that can happen at the most inconvenient times – like in front of your boss or on a roller coaster. But have no fear, we’re here to explain what happens when you feel dizzy and how to deal with it.
What is dizziness and why does it happen?
First off, let’s define dizziness. It’s that feeling where you suddenly lose balance, or the world around you seems like it’s spinning. The fancy medical term for this sensation is vertigo (no, not the Alfred Hitchcock movie).
So, why do we experience vertigo? A few different reasons really:
- Inner ear problems
- Dehydration
- Low blood pressure
- Anxiety
- Side effects from medication
Basically anything disrupting our brain’s ability to interpret signals telling us where our body is in space.
Symptoms of Dizziness
Now before we dive deeper into causes and cures, let’s run through some signs that indicate someone might be experiencing dizziness.
A person moves or sways unsteadily.
They may also appear as though they are about pass out.
Some people feel as if they are moving while standing still.
Different types of ‘freaky’ Dizzy spells
If there’s one thing which makes “dizzyness” even more confusing than its name spelling (“why two z ‘s”) , its array of sub-types:
1.Cervicogenic dizziness – caused by neck issues(who knew right?)
2.Meniere`s disease – cause unknown but involves fluid in the inner ear(hardly fair)
3.BPPV: Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo – probably due to calcium carbonate crystals which accumulate within an area called the labyrinth(author doesn’t want this).
4.Vertebrobasilar insufficiency(VBI) – is caused when the blood supply to your brainstem falter(how rude)
There are others but you get the idea.
Tips on how to cure dizziness
Feeling off-balanced should and can go as quickly and suddenly as it came on. Here are a plethora of things anyone can try which might bring about relief:
- Hydrating oneself; dehydration contributes towards bouts vertigo especially during warm weather.
- Get relevant medical screening for possible inner ear infections or Meniere’s disease(takes notes, this could be important).
- Mental health coping mechanisms, like counselling and therapy(this too)
We know some cases may require speciality medical intervention such as use or medication(only under doctor’s orders kids) specific operations.
When Should You See Doctor When You Feel Dizzy?
As mentioned earlier there’s always that one person who’ll run with “it ain’t that deep, I just need Gatorade”. However dizzy spells should always be approached with an intensity of caution; go ahead make that appointment if experiencing these signs together or alone:
- Sudden loss of hearing
- Chest Pains
- Difficulty speaking/communication issues
Don’t mess around
Well folks, dizziness no longer needs to be shrouded in unpleasantness even after reading through sub-types which would have made us all fear going outside. Remember to follow our simple tips – hydrate your body, seek professional attention where symptoms become hard-core ,and most importantly keep calm.
So keep looking up,just maybe not upside down (if prone to dizziness at least).
