What happens to our food?

Food is one of the most important aspects of our lives. From the moment we wake up until bedtime, we are always thinking about what’s for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Have you ever wondered what happens to food? Well, if so, you’re in luck! We’ll be unlocking this mystery once and for all through this interesting yet funny read.

Where Does Our Food Come From?

Before we dive into where it goes or how it gets there, let’s backtrack a bit as far back as possible; where does food come from? Sure…’the grocery store’. But wait–how did those apples get there or even that package of ground beef…where were they born specifically?

The Farm

Many may agree that farms around us play a major role in getting foods on our plates. Farms raise countless crops like corns which can later become popcorn (ooh I see a night movie in progress). They also breed numerous animals such as chicken which will eventually succumb to being battered & fried%(woops too soon?). At these farms all sorts of procedures take place like fishing nets casted across ponds(I’m saying – fish don’t fly!) , dozens upon dozens ‘moo-ing'(well i suppose moo-bah would just sound silly)..of cows(who still make milk long after their calfs have retired), vegetables groomed(a.k.a pesticides sprayedawkward silence) and much more.

Transportation

So now that its all bunched together thanks shopping cart warriors, how ‘does’ it actually get down town? How do your favorite yogurt jars manage not breaking during their commute home from the department store shelf? Well if you guessed “we drive”, highly unlikely but props on consistency at least!

You’d think somehow fish might use public transport ATM machines right?(Wrong), nope instead raw seafoods travel by boat (cruiseline vibes). Ships and boats dash the Atlantic sea delivering tons of fish for your display case. Once we move our focus from water bodies to dry ground, trucks leave us wondering oh so fitly(‘not’)-‘Do those cows even have a driver’s license?’ As vans bustle about-things like perishable groceries are being brough across distance gaps; cool bags which contain ice cubes will prevent food items like meat, poultry, eggs, dairy fruits & veggies in transit(from spoiling whereby they may not stay good enough until super arrives!).

So Back To The Big Question- What Happens Next(in Summary)?

Food is produced on farms located all over most countries around the world;from there it is transported to grocery stores where hungry people ‘like you’ purchase it .Simple right? … Haha, hardly! There are many mysteries surrounding what happens after we buy our food.

Storage at Home

Once you get your groceries home, storage becomes an important factor (you can say that again)! Everything has their own ideal conditions while some just love wherever you think would be perfect(No free spirited stuff here).

Pantry

Many non-perishables including cereal, lentils, rice, honey preserved fruits since theres no bother bout spoilage concerns.

Refrigerator

This appliance of cold power plays host to endless varieties: –

  • Beverages as well as beer(the kind popular among adults!,nam) find comfort chilling in this white box
  • Cheese prefers clinging onto fridge walls. Hard cheeses but soft ones must avoid freezing cold hampering quality or taste.
  • Meat isn’t going anywhere near room temperature(irreversible damage alert!) thus refrigeration comes quite handy.(extra tip-in order to elongate shelf life, follow sell by dates stickers).
  • Various produce such as lettuce and carrots also go into refrigerators with easily recognised drawers/labels inside according to produce kind.

Preparation

From peeling fingers to chopping blocks, many ingredients require a certain level of preparation before we can enjoy them. Let’s look at some common ones!

Beans & Lentils

Many beans and lentils need soaking as part of the cooking process, draining off the water from this is important after it has done its job.Absorbed glassy surface or not–if being longer cooked they’re perfect reason to dance around home for 2-3 hours!.

Meat

There are several meats requiring special attention because..well they were living beings once too you know! After unwrapping chicken breasts _(not done with wrapping until UNwrapping!) ,promptly slotting them inside fridge compartments comes next; hygiene concerns aplenty where meat is best kept entirely away from other ingredients also in the fridge.Arrange food sets, pans, colanders ready to spring into lives again since there’ll be alot handling via cutting board, knives plus similar utensils(Hand washing recommended beforehand). Meat chunk by burnt chunk, fry all sides(apart from those that refuse flipping-lets wish their unfit souls farewell)then serve hot on plates!,Additionally various marinades built with yummy spices can add further kick!

Consumption

Now that your masterpiece meal(salute chefs!), lets’ remember an equally topsy turvy world surrounds our meal experience beyond mere preparatory efforts.

Digestion Process AKA ‘What Everyone Does After Eating’

The digestion process kicks starts merely seconds after food enters mouth. The tongue cuts bits down into smaller bits, resulting mixture then advances downwards whilst saliva ensures smooth flow enroute stomach. Here gastric juice(which contains hydrochloric acid) gets injected so as too break up complex molecules(kinda like smoothing out wrinkles!) readily absorbed by body liquids.(We won’t speak anything about what happens next here post absorption but yeah 😉 )

It Ain’t Over Yet-Yep,Waste Happens!

1 pound of salad tossed-off,various meat parts abandoned and alike can cost up big bucks! All sorts of waste from the food industry feed out landfills and quite often,it’s simply because we don’t consume what chefs /restaurants dish with considerable portions, ending up most times inside rubbish piles. A plausible solution though is freezing leftovers within freezers or fridge(if it results in dehydrated snacks…hey thats just mre positive energy!,You know?(wink). So next time theres leftover surprise stew, seal it off correctly, stow away & pop back into microwave when needed.
In conclusion, the path taken by foods(as provided here) might not be exciting as travelling to New York city, swimming outside Costa Rican waters or even attending Celine Dion concert-but having an insight continues making us more conscious eaters—-who never take their pantry/fridge for granted again!(And hopefully those salads too!)
