What foods to avoid eating when you have gout?

If you’re a big fan of steak and red wine, then we’ve got some bad news for you. Gout is a type of arthritis that can cause excruciating pain in your joints, especially in your big toe. It happens when there’s too much uric acid in your blood, which makes sharp crystals form around your joint areas.

But don’t worry! By simply avoiding certain foods and drinks, you can prevent an attack or reduce the frequency of one happening. Here are some things to keep away from if you experience chronic gout attacks.

Say NO to Organ meat

Organ meats like liver and kidneys may be nutritious(?) but they are packed with purines- compounds that eventually break down into uric acid when digested (do not eat them unless you want intense levels of pain).

  • Liver
  • Kidneys
  • Sweetbreads
  • Tongue

Avoid/ restrict consumption of shellfish:

Shellfish such as shrimp, lobster, crab and clams contain high amounts of purines which breakdown into Uric Acid as well (seriously though… stay away at all costs🤨)

  • Lobster
  • Shrimp
  • Crab
  • Clam

## Spamming Sugars:
As usual anything sweet would naturally come bogged up with lots sugar which thereby lead to trigger the release aldosterone hormone.
Aldosterone retention causes a reduction in ammonium ion excretion leading to greater acidity within body tissues [1]

  • Donuts 🍩

🥮😒 Why picky pie

Knock out Alcoholic Beverages:

Drinking alcohol is not good for anyone’s health especially pee-in-your-bed-drunkard free-spirited individuals

During happy hour limit alcoholic beverages intake

NB: Beer has been linked more frequently compared other alcoholic beverages as being capable of increasing the risks of gout attacks i.e. it increases production and growth of uric acid

  • Beer
  • Whiskey
  • Wine

But who are we kidding? You’re better off not drinking at all! Your health is counting on you to make decent choices.

Avoid High-fructose Corn Syrup

High levels of high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) can increase your risk for developing Gout. A study found that Consuming a beverage with HFCS may trigger an immediate glycaemic response thus mediating buildup in purine metabolism [2] 🥤

  • Soft drinks like Pepsi or Coke etc ought to be avoided to control consumptionof fructose

## Munching Red Meat:

Beef, pork & lamb have been noted to contribute as sources of proteins but not necessarily nutritional value- proceed with Caution

When cooked, These meats release purines into your bloodstream which raises the risk factors attached arthritis-like symptoms.

  • Bacon
  • Lamb chops🍴

But seriously…. why bacon🥓

In conclusion, making small changes by avoiding certain foods/drinks could greatly help decrease painful moments associated with gout. With this knowledge in mind keep away liquor from kids (Note: saying No makes you a responsible adult) 😁 always remember moderation is key.

Stay healthy folks!
