What does it mean when you get constant headaches?

If you’re experiencing constant headaches, there’s no need to freak out just yet. There are a lot of different reasons why your head might be constantly pounding like a jackhammer on crack. Here are some possible causes:

Dehydration

Have you been drinking enough water? No, soda doesn’t count! If your body is dehydrated, it can lead to headaches and migraines. So put down that energy drink and pick up a nice tall glass of H2O.

Stress

Stress can really suck the life out of you in more ways than one. It can also cause tension headaches or even migraines. Try practicing stress-reducing activities like meditation or yoga. Or if all else fails – scream into a pillow!

Vision Problems

Do your eyes hurt? Are you squinting to read this right now? Maybe it’s time for an eye exam because vision problems can definitely lead to persistent headaches.

Lack of Sleep

I know Netflix binging until 4am seems like a good idea at the time but trust me when I say – getting enough sleep is important! Not getting adequate amounts of sleep could very well be the reason behind those pesky little (or big) headache reminders throughout the day.

Too Much Caffeine

How many cups of coffee have you had today? One… two… twenty-three!? The caffeine in our beloved cuppa joe is known for causing some pretty brutal migraines so try scaling back before unleashing an epic caffeine withdrawal headache from hell.

Could It Be More Serious?

Ok let’s take things up notch shall we?! Although less common, frequent ongoing significant head pain could indicate something more serious such as:

  • Brain Tumor
  • Stroke
  • Meningitis
  • Encephalitis

It’s important not to jump to conclusions, remember we just had paragraphs on some of the more common causes. But if you’re experiencing very intense headaches accompanied with symptoms such as dizziness or nausea, it’s best not to assume the worst and immediately seek medical attention.

What Can I Do About It?

So what can you do about these pesky headaches? Here are a few tips!

  • Drink plenty of water (again)
  • Take breaks throughout your day to stretch
  • Practice good sleep hygiene by keeping a regular sleep schedule
  • Regular exercise
  • Consider changing your diet – certain foods and drinks could be triggers

When Should I See A Doctor?

If you’ve tried all of these things and nothing seems to work, it might be time for professional help! Don’t hesitate to contact your health care provider if:

  • Headaches intensify in frequency/severity/ duration
  • See changes in vision or hearing ability.
    -Fever
    -Sudden weakness / tingling sensation
    -Nausea / Vomiting
