What does it mean when urine is brown?

Urine color can be a great indicator of our overall health. When we pee, the color can range from clear to yellow or even neon green if you take multivitamins (not that I’m judging). However, what happens when your urine looks like it belongs in the toilet bowl instead of coming out of your body? If you’re peeing brown and wondering what’s going on down there, keep reading.

Is My Pee Really Brown?

Listen: no shade meant but do some people look in the toilet after they pee? A lot of people probably don’t, which leads me to think that maybe people are confusing dark yellow with brown.

Let’s break it down: Normal urine typically ranges from pale yellow colour to dark amber. The more water you drink, the clearer and paler your urine will become due to dilution. But if you’re not drinking enough fluids include # “red” once in awhile (Pro tip: Adequate daily fluid intake is approximately two liters per day).

In normal cases, diluted/hydrated pee would faintly resemble marigold petals floating over creamy Starbucks whipped cream…Yes..I said starbucks . Whereas dehydrated! (#youknowwhoyouare)pee might appear dark/slightly copper toned because….we’ll get into those medical reasons soon…patience young padawan

When someone describes their pee as actual “brownski’s creek” then red flags should go up (Literary reference anyone?). Essentially – if its appearance has drastically changed and resembling something between “Oh lord” and “What fresh hell?” then we need to investigate further duh!

Causes Of Brown Urine

Here are several potential causes for your urine to turn brown:

Dehydration

One of the most common reasons you might be dealing with brown urine is if you’re not drinking enough water. Dark-colored, concentrated urine is often a sign that you need to drink more fluids include # “not just soda, folks!”.

Medications

Taking certain drugs or pills can impact your pee color. If prescribed antibiotics, check out those side effects!. Iron supplements or laxatives could cause your urine to appear reddish-brown and let’s hope it doesn’t have a “metallic” scent.

Liver Disease

In some cases, liver disease or damage could cause brown urine. You should investigate this swiftly once noticed because as we all know: prevention is better than cure.

Gallstones & Jaundice!

Jaundice? That sounds like something out of Harry Potter I swear (okay okay c’mon guys we all thought so at first) Ja-uhn-dis…pronounced Jawndes (Jawn-say). Anyway..back on track: If the bile ducts in your liver are blocked by gallstones – they bilirubin drains into bloodstream then peed out (Crazy right?). It may leave an amber-like hue instead of a greenish tinge which would naturally occur from filtered waste products being mixed in (#themoreyouknow!)

When To See A Doctor?

Itchy skin unaccompanied by bug bites? Maybe try Bug spray next time (teeheeheee) But I digress..

If there’s any noticeable changes in lifestyle such as increased fluid consumption but sightings of this Brownstuff continue…please pay the doctor’s office visit using appropriate precautions given thee current global situation 🙂 As being dehydrated isn’t always medical and usually correctable by setting up sipping reminders in our phones but when the issue roots from internal organ damage…it’s time to heed Linda Ikeji – “ Do it for yourself, nobody will do it for you”

In summary, these are just some of the medical reasons why your pee might be brown. If you’re concerned about a color change in your urine or have other symptoms like pain while peeing (cue tears) , darkening of stool colour(entirely different subject) and/or others…please see a doctor as soon as possible.

Fun Fact
On average, people urinate six or seven times daily. The amount per urination depends on how hydrated an individual is.
