What does cbc test detect?
Welcome to the quirky article on ‘What does cbc test detect?’ that will leave you amused and informed. Grab a cup of coffee, sit back and relax while I give you an insight into what CBC is all about.
Let’s Get Started
CBC stands for Complete Blood Count- sounds fancy right? But did you know that this test can tell us so much more than just blood count? It’s amazing!
First things first though, let me break down the basics of the CBC test for those who are not familiar with it.
What is a CBC Test?
A complete blood count (CBC) test measures different components of your blood such as red blood cells (RBCs), white blood cells (WBCs), platelets, hemoglobin etc. The results from your doctors’ evaluation help in determining various medical conditions.
CBC tests are often ordered before any surgical procedures or if there are concerns related to physical health issues like lethargy or fatigue. Also called Hemogram, WBCs or other related terms depending on factors like where we hang out!
And now onto some serious stuff…
Understanding Components of a CBC Test
So, your doctor prescribed a hemo-whatever-doodle-test…no worries friend! Here is everything you need to know:
RBC – Red Blood Cells
Red Blood Cells work day and night pumping oxygen around our body; they also contain hemoglobin which binds with CO2 giving them their iconic colour. Their number has numerous indications ranging from general health to underlying causes of anaemia.
Fun fact: African grey parrots have nucleated RBCs unlike humans which allows better adaptation towards living at high altitudes!
WBC – White Blood Cells
Ah yes…the good old defender squad against infections!’Yep’, these tiny soldiers fight off foreign invaders entering our bloodstream while keeping tabs on any rogue/mutant cells that might cause harm. Different types of WBCs have different roles, but all are important in their own rights.
Platelets
Platelets come into action if there is an injury sustained by the blood vessel walls, they help with clotting and preventing excessive bleeding. Incidentally, this can lead to bloody noses or worse from not keeping track of cuts!
Fun fact: Platypus has a protein in its platelets that helps carry oxygen! Isn’t nature beautiful?
Hemoglobin
Hemoglobin is the iron-rich pigment which gives RBC’s their color – it also helps them transport oxygen around the body. These HB heroes also test for some commonly known underlying medical issues such as Sickle cell disease and Thalassemia- conditions affecting haem-globin production.
How Does CBC Help Detect Diseases?
Now let’s get down to brass tacks (hey I didn’t name it!)…what do we look for when interpreting CBC blood tests for actual diseases/infections?
Anemia
Anemia is a condition caused by a lack of red blood cells or low hemoglobin levels; this results in lethargy, weakness and other worrisome symptoms. A CBC test confirms In cases where one suspects anaemic tendencies developing- Time to increase those leafy greens!!
Infections
Elevated White Blood Cells indicate presence of infection fighting off unwanted bacteria/virus’- depending on what we suspect here; further testing might be required including x-rays etc. Who knew these hulking fellas could detect something so tiny?!
P.S Did you wash your hands friend? You should…germs are always lurking about!
Clotting Disorders
Low platelet numbers can signal various clotting disorders like Von Willebrand disease amongst others causing multiple small spots under skin called Petechiae whose appearance leaves us feeling blotchy all over.
Fun Fact: Elephants have 140,000 platelets per microlitre of blood- can I make a terrible joke about them never forgetting? Oops too late.
Should You Get A CBC Test Done?
Does your doctor recommend getting a CBC test done? Are you facing regular symptoms such as fatigue or weakness etc.? It might be time to get checked-out!
CBC tests are safe for both children and adults; they carry minimal risks which may include slight pain if multiple samples required. Rest assured though that sample collection is super-fast with results being turned around within few hours.
Now go out there my dear friends and live a healthy life peace of mind knowing what CBC really is – “the swiss-army-knife of medical testing!”
Remember: To stay happy and healthy always exercise, eat well and avoid infectious people…just saying!
