What does an eruption cyst look like?
If you’re a parent, chances are high that at some point, you’ve found yourself worrying about every little bump, cyst, and growth on your child’s body. One such thing that might alarm you (and don’t worry – we won’t tell anyone!) is the dreaded eruption cyst.
While the name of this phenomenon may sound like something out of “Jurassic Park,” it’s actually quite common – and harmless! Here’s what you need to know about eruption cysts.
Explaining Eruption Cysts
An eruption cyst is a small pocket of fluid or blood that forms between the gum tissue and tooth before the tooth erupts through the gums. Essentially, it’s like when someone bumps their head and gets a lump; in this case, it’s just on your mouth instead!
The appearance of these bursts can be alarming for parents especially since they often resemble something more dramatic than their actual presence.
Generally speaking- Nothing to worry about here folks! Just keep an eye on them 😉
Things To Spot
So how do you know if what you’re seeing is indeed an eruption cyst? Here are some signs:
- Raised swelling next to tooth
- Bluish-purple lesion (sometimes even white)
- Tenderness
- Redness around area
Many moms will still ring their friendly dental office with pictures sent taken with phones from all angles trying to detail precisely what they see… Let us try to spare one another!
Timing Is Everything
One crucial distinguishing factor to note: These only occur during the process where baby teeth begin thru break through gums.
During this time frame blood vessels in sockets can expand as roots shift further towards surface causing whats called formation disruption beneath delicate gingiva layers. In simplest terms – imagine tiny earthquakes occurring beneath perfectly calm soil – Scary stuff? Not really…
If baby has not begun to develop teeth or is over the process of losing teeth – what you are seeing may in fact not be an eruption cyst.
Aesthetics
So we have established that eruption cysts aren’t a life-threatening condition. So, what do they look like?
The color can vary from blue/grayish hue to white depending on tissue thickness above lesion- similar in appearance to pimples but just smaller and less icky!
Are Eruption Cysts Painful?
Nope! Thankfully these disturbances although visually alarming typically come with little to no pain. However there is always a possibility of tenderness on tight smiles due to stretching gum line.
Most importantly do not pop the bubble as bacteria could spread and cause further discomfort up close around mouth area causing unwanted trips for additional dental visitation.
“I’m still Not Sure…”
When in doubt pick up thy phone book appointment with your local dentistry office ASAP if there’s any question evolution is stunting itself beneath gums (no one wants their child’s fairy dreams ruined by damage).
This will quickly dispel any doubts that you may be having and give both you and your kiddo some peace of mind!
Remember The Good News
It’s worth taking solace in knowing: Holistically during period between primary/baby teeth into permanent/adult versions – it’s perfectly normal for those jarring bumps known as eruptions cysts along the way 🙂
