What does a collarbone fracture feel like?
Have you ever experienced unbearable pain in your shoulder that made even the thought of lifting a mug seem impossible? Did you hear something crack or snap right before it happened? Well, my dear friend, if this is the case – bad news for ya! You might have just cracked your collarbone. But don’t worry; let’s talk about what it feels like to get through this annoying and painful situation.
Understanding Your Collarbone
Before we dive into how a fractured collarbone feels like, let’s understand its anatomy. The clavicle bone or what we commonly call the collarbone connects our breastplate (sternum) with our shoulder blade (scapula), providing support and stability to the upper extremity.
A car crash, hard fall on an outstretched arm, or even trying to catch a heavy blow while playing football can cause immense pressure on the bone resulting in an unfortunate incident of cracking.
Sudden Intense Pain
If you’ve popped your wrist during working out or twisted your ankle while running errands, you know what instant sharp agony feels like. A broken collarbone isn’t very different when it comes to immediate pain as soon as injury occurs.
Imagine falling hard straight onto your shoulder/head from five feet above ground/ getting smashed by someone twice slimmer than Dwayne Johnson because they didn’t play well by rules during that ‘friendly’ rugby match, and bang!! It hurts instantly — thanks to all those sensitive nerves connected directly through bone fractures triggering alarms throughout your body notifying “Something went wrong here!”
So brace yourself for sudden intense(expletive)pain accompanied by piercing discomfort excruciating enough making any regular human being feel frustration multiplied by ten!
Swelling & Bruising
After some time has passed since the initial impact took place(don’t expect a time machine to transport you directly after fracturing your collarbone), swelling and bruising around the fracture area is inevitable. The affected shoulder might seem unusually large, and deep shades of black/blue/purple color flesh bruises may greet you every time your loved ones take a look at it.
Apart from that whole swollen-shotput-shoulder going on, moving or stretching arms might feel way over-compacted as the tissues wrapped around broken bone begin to swell upon inflammation creating compression in surrounding areas.
Collarbone Looks Crooked
If the previous two pointers weren’t enough for confirming if you broke something inside out of which one didn’t need prodding with any sharp object whatsoever(cough-syringe-cough), here’s another dead giveaway to check whether or not your clavicle has broken in half – “your bones can tell quite an asymmetrical story.”
Your collarbone will appear crooked, extending beyond where it should be protruding past what other human shoulders typically do.
Fear not this doesn’t mean ‘an end’ to those sultry selfies(just don’t sauce that ‘911-I-Killed-myselfie-Camera’ thing yet). However, brace yourself for walking around school/work/neighbourhood with dozens of people coming up asking “Hey! Wasn’t there supposed to be a break between your head and shoulders?”
Restricted Mobility & Numbness
If we haven’t lost you yet talking about all things painful, let’s talk about how limited mobility would make anyone get serious FOMO missing out still going through tough times recovering from injuries like these.
Collarbones connect arms with our upper bodies making them partial culprits behind arm movements alongside shoulder blades. But when they’re experiencing severe fractures/trauma resulting in trauma/hemorrhage/clogging/blockages within membrane-bones/nerves/layers restricted mobility(neck-upper-back-shoulder-arm)may leave someone feeling frustrated as their arm movement fumbles around like a one-winged turkey trying to fly.
Not only that, but when your collarbone breaks, it can result in numbness or tingling sensations moving throughout the neck and shoulder. It feels like there’s an ‘itch you can’t scratch’ but accompanied by distressing discomfort along with limited mobility altogether leaving anyone feeling helpless.
Painful Breathing
If you thought your gory misery ends here, guess what, it doesn’t! Alongside other symptoms listed above – suddenly painful breathing would make an unwanted guest appearance ruining all good vibes of comfort for anyone going through a broken collarbone experience(FML!).
Inhaling deep or couching might put pressure on lungs/joints/bones creating extra uneasiness throughout chest/thorax/sternum joints making many activities (like simple laundry or dish cleaning even😣) incredibly difficult for affected individuals.
Wrapping things up
All things considered, breaking your collarbone is no joke. We’ve gone through several ways how the fracture will feel, including instant intense pain upon injury, swelling & bruising over time, crooked looking bones juggling acts (to prevent further damage), restricted mobility right down to painful breathing – this has got to be enough motivation at this point for keeping bones healthy and protected from any possible harm thrown our way!
After reading what ‘broken clavicles’ come loaded with(even if we wished they came gift-wrapped sometime… sigh!), let us hope none among us ever have first-hand experiences in these matters; better stay safe than sorry!
