What do you do when your nail falls off?

Congratulations! You have just experienced a traumatic event that many people experience but rarely talk about: losing a nail. Whether it was due to an injury, fungal infection or other causes, the first thing you need to do is remain calm as we take you through what comes next.

Identify the Cause of the Problem

The good news is that nails are resilient and will usually grow back on their own. However, there could be underlying issues such as brittle nail syndrome or psoriasis causing your nails to fall off frequently. It’s important to identify and address these problems so they don’t continue happening in future.

Clean the Affected Area

This is where things can get gory so brace yourself, please! If your toenail has fallen off completely, chances are there is some dried blood or other fluids around your toes/nails. Clean the affected area with lukewarm water and mild soap thoroughly until all debris has been removed; then dry it with a clean towel (use paper towels if available).

Now here’s our favourite part (as much sarcasm as possible) – deciding whether or not to cover up after having lost our lovely precious nail!

The Case For Bandaging Your Toe Up

  • Keeps away bacteria
  • Prevents further damage
  • Conceals unsightly wounds
  • Offers emotional support (?)

Well alrighty then…

If you choose this route please note:

Make Sure You Bandage It Properly

• Apply antibiotic cream/ointment onto sanitized bandages before wrapping around toe.
• Do not wrap too tightly!
• Change bandage daily until wound heals over.

Otherwise you run risk of infection… Trust us when we say an infected wound is never beautiful πŸ™ .

On Exposing Your Toe…

(We’ll spare going into much detail cause we’re on your lawn here, wouldn’t want to make things too awkward.)

There’s really little point not exposing your toe if you don’t have any serious movement concerns or persistent pain. No need to conceal something that will eventually heal completely!

Besides:

  • Airing out the affected area is good for drying up accumulated fluids.
  • Your sock won’t get stuck between bandages.
  • Nails grow better in sunlight.

Warning: Socks and Shoes Ahead

If the idea of being sans socks makes you feel uneasy; wear a breathable cotton sock with no seams till new nail grows back. Avoid wearing tight shoes/boots unless necessary! (Save em for when we watch Kung fu Panda?)

Keeping it Dry

Prevent fungal infection by avoiding moisture accumulation around affected areas.. Sometimes even sweat can ruin your toenail if exposed frequently!!! Now now, mind ya bizness people πŸ˜›

The best options are:

1) Wear flip-flops or sandals until complete recovery; this will allow air circulation crucial for speedy healing process!

2) Use Saran/cling wrap before covering with regular rubber boots during rainy months.

3) Use synthetic sports fabric while working out/sweating excessively – learn from the professionals πŸ˜‰

Even though just one of our nails fell off it does not mean that we can neglect others!! Keep them hydrated, trim them properly and avoid injuring surrounding cuticles at all cost!!

QUICK TIP Keep backup buffer files ready in case you mess up post-nail-sale!!

Lastly folks let me reiterate how normal it is losing a nail – Come on who hasn’t? Its bound to happen once every blue moon πŸ˜‰ Just patiently nurse your ailment and remember there are Pinterest worthy designs waiting as soon as those pesky bad boys grow back πŸ˜‰

Take good care and a speedy recovery to you!
