What do if your neck hurts?

Are you feeling like your head is too heavy for your body? Are you experiencing pain and discomfort in your neck that won’t go away no matter what you do? You’re not alone. Neck pain can be annoying, and most of us have experienced it at some point in our lives. Whether caused by bad posture, injury or excessive use, there are simple things we can all do to ease the tension.

The root of the problem

Before we tackle how to address this painful issue, let’s take a moment to understand why it happens (and please don’t tell me because life hates us). There are various sources for neck pain:

  • Repetitive Movements
  • Poor biomechanics
  • Sleeping oddly
  • Mental Health Issues

These little annoyances can lead to bigger pains such as pinched nerves or slipped discs but fortunately here’s a list below on ways to prevent these issues before they become worse.

Prevention Techniques

Here are some easy-to-follow tips recommended by experts who actually know way more about anatomy than me(thank goodness):

  1. Sitting pretty
First things first; sit up straight! Bad posture–especially when sitting down–leads directly towards unwanted muscle tension.

    • At work: Adjust chairs (or desk) so elbows rest comfortably while typing; keep hips near backrests & feet flat on floor.Well set-up workplaces will accomodate technological support or physical products that provide additional assistance
    • Watching tv? Nix lounging with soft cushions against your backside, rather find someone else’s couch without tall backing that requires fixed postures sitting upright.
  2. Work it Out

Consider incorporating consistent stretching exercises into daily routines:

Stand by standing arms-lengths distance from walls facing forward while placing heels flush w/ baseboards then gently lunge toward wall while keeping head, neck and upper torso aligned
Practice ball-rolling: Place one of those big foam rollers/cylinders between shoulder blades and slowly move back & forth for about 5 minutes. (Hint: Roll gently please.)
  1. Take a Break

Yes, we know you’re busy…but at least take short breaks to release muscle tension.

As much as possible adjust your chair so that sitting is at an angle or slightly reclined back to relieve pressure.
Uncross legs, feet flat on the ground with comfy footwear
(If they are seriously uncomfortable it’s best to throw them out)!
  1. Work Remotely

Two days ago you’d never have dreamed remote work would be so awesome but check-dis-out:

Boost picture quality from trashy-$30-web-cam w/ complimentarily video call sound wireless ear buds or headphones; capable of allowing increased body mobility while still hearing phone conversations or listening in on Zoom meetings
(Note: Please avoid dancing too well during these virtual conferences)

When Pain Does Occur

When all else fails and pain still persists there may be additional methods to help lessen symptoms:

### Consider Medications

If non-prescribed methods do not effectively reduce pain then consider anti-inflammatory medications provided by pharmacy for faster healing process.

Physical Therapy Treatments

If arthritis lower-health issue treatments don’t facilitate sufficient relief, ask provider regarding methods that could warrant assistance towards effective elimination of pain.

Don’t Forget Sleep Hygiene!

It’s also suggested consideration into hygiene concerning sleep postures which can influence its overall condition because little things matter.

  • Avoid sleeping face down (that only makes the hyperextension worse)
  • Utilize soft-support pillows during slumber periods (these offer better comfort compared than hard materials such as cotton)

Overall try adjusting convalescent areas receiving more exposure towards UV and natural light sources for healthier effects uplifting health conducive to easy recovery.

So, there you have it! Dealing with neck pain can sometimes be tricky but not complicated – just make sure you apply these suggestions as needed to reduce pain and discomfort.
