What causes non gonococcal urethritis?

Ah, non-gonococcal urethritis. A phrase almost as fun to say as it is to have. So what exactly is NGU? It’s a fancy way of saying “inflammation of the urethra that isn’t caused by gonorrhea.” And let me tell you, it can really ruin your day.

So why do some people get hit with this lovely condition while others are able to pee happily ever after? Here are a few reasons:

Bacteria, Bacteria Everywhere!

Bacterial infections can cause NGU, but not all bacteria are created equal in their ability to piss us off…er…cause inflammation. The most common culprits include chlamydia and mycoplasma genitalium (which sounds like something out of Star Trek), but there are plenty of other bacteria lurking around just waiting for their chance to party in your nether regions.

Viral Infections- More Than Just Herpes

It’s not just germs that can knock your junk for a loop; viral infections can also lead to NGU. Don’t panic though – we’re not talking zombie apocalypse level viruses here (although 2020 has been crazy enough already). Things like herpes and cytomegalovirus have been linked to the condition, but they’re far from the only offenders.

No STD Required

While sexually transmitted diseases tend to hog all the attention when it comes to anything related “down there,” you don’t actually need an STD for NGU. There are countless irritants floating around that could be causing your inflammation: soaps, detergents, spermicidal gels…even certain brands of condoms or lube! Who knew being safe could sometimes be unsafe?

Overzealous Washing Is Not Always Good

We’ve all heard that cleanliness is next to godliness, but sometimes it’s better to let your junk live a little dirtier. Over-washing can actually cause NGU, and not just down below; the same goes for excessive washing of the ass (sometimes called anal or butt hygiene). So sit back, relax, and let your microbiome do its thing.

Your Own Immune System- The Good, Bad And Ugly

Sometimes we’re our own worst enemies, which is especially true when it comes to non-gonococcal urethritis. Believe it or not, overactive immune systems can lead to inflammation too! Meanwhile on the other side of defense mechanisms/immunological war games is where low immunity could become a culprit.

Partner Play Rules Must Be Applied

Finally, we have one of the most common reasons: partners. If you’re getting up close and personal with someone who has an infection themselves – even if they don’t show any symptoms – chances are you’ll end up with some form of urethral discomfort as well. Always remember this life rule “What happens in Vegas… ends up happening down there.”

So what can you do about NGU? Unfortunately, prevention isn’t always possible since many cases come from irritants we encounter every day (and trust us…we know there aren’t enough bubbles in Lysol wipes)…but making sure both partners get tested regularly can help. That’s right folks! Make testing #NORMAL!

In conclusion: Non-gonococcal urethritis may be a pain in the penis/vagina/anus/all-over-downer-here area , but at least now you know some things that might help avoid future flare-ups. Just remember- be kind to yourself… Because germs certainly won’t be 😉
