What causes nausea and shaking?

Have you ever woken up feeling nauseated and shaky, wondering what on earth could be the cause? Fear not, for we have got your back! Below are some possible explanations for why you might be experiencing these symptoms.

Motion Sickness

If you were just on a boat ride or in a car with winding roads, then motion sickness might be the culprit. When there is discrepancy between what your eyes see and how your body feels movement-wise, it can lead to nausea/vomiting (yuck!) and shaking due to the inner ear being confused about sensory input.

Remedies

  • Sit facing forward when in a vehicle.
  • Keep fresh air circulating by opening windows if possible.
  • Focus on one non-moving object outside of window (such as distant horizon).
  • Eat crackers or drink ginger ale to help ease symptoms.

Anxiety

Are you feeling nervous about something that is going to happen soon like public speaking? If so, anxiety symptoms such as nausea and shaking can definitely show up at just the thought of said event.

Remedies

  • Relaxation techniques such as deep breathing exercises.
  • Diminish caffeine intake before stressful events (which I know no one wants).
  • Mindfulness meditation helps alleviate anxiety symptoms.

Hangover

Okay let’s get real here: did you consume alcohol last night? If yes, congratulations! That pounding headache accompanied by bouts of nausea/shaking means it was time well spent. Alcohol causes inflammation which leads to dehydration triggering aforementioned symptoms.

Remedies

  • Drink plenty of water!! (hydration should improve all hangover-related ailments)
  • Have small meals throughout day rather than larger ones less frequently (which means more excuses for snacking!)
  • Avoid drinking too much alcohol again next time!

Cancer Treatment Side Effects

Chemotherapy/radiation treatment targeting cancer cells may lead to ocular/vestibular (inner ear) toxicity- hello nausea and shaking! (Yay, just what we thought life couldn’t get any better!)

Remedies

  • Be sure to discuss side effects with your doctor/oncologist.
  • Eating small frequent diets throughout day as tolerated can help keep caloric content stable.

Food Poisoning/Stomach Flu

Ingestion of food or drink contaminated by bacteria, viruses or parasites can lead to stomach/intestinal inflammation which directly affects the digestive system leading to aforementioned symptoms.

Remedies

  • Maintain hydration.
  • In cases of bacterial infections antibiotics may be prescribed.
  • Keep calm and let nature take its course.

Medication Side Effects

Certain medications like chemotherapy agents/antidepressants/blood pressure meds are known to cause nausea/shaking related adverse drug reactions. Make sure you investigate new medication before taking!

Remedies

  • If possible, switch medication under medical supervision.
  • Try taking medications with food rather than on an empty stomanch (again more excuses for snacking)

Migraine Headaches

Migraines aren’t just heckin’ painful when they happen; nausea, vomiting (gross) or feeling shaky is also something that might come when one hits.

Remedies:

  • Avoid triggers such as bright lights/loud noises/stressful events if able.
  • Painkillers specifically designed for migraines can work wonders (!!)
  • Practicing good sleep hygiene increases likelihood of successful prevention/options available in treating migraine headaches.

Whether it’s motion sickness or anxiety/nervous anticipation about public speaking that rocks this boat (sorry I had no choice but to make a corny joke), rest assured there are several things which could have caused your symptoms. However don’t worry too much since most causes for these awful feelings resolve within short periods without serious health consequences (which in turn helps much with maintaining a positive attitude).
