What causes foot neuropathy?

You know what’s worse than a headache? Foot neuropathy. Seriously, this condition feels like a bunch of needles poking you from the inside out. In simpler terms, foot neuropathy is nerve damage that affects your feet and toes as well as the rest of your body.

As for why it happens – well, there are many reasons behind this unpleasant sensation that runs through your legs like hot lava chasing Indiana Jones:

1. Diabetes

If you’re living with diabetes or pre-diabetes, odds are you may suffer from some degree of peripheral neuropathy at some point in life. Sidenote: If diabetes was an emoji it would be 🍩💻🏠… just kidding! But seriously, it’s no laughing matter.

Diabetic nerve damage often appears first in the feet before moving on to other parts of your body so watch out!

2. Alcoholism

Alcoholics don’t only suffer from financial ruin and emotional distress but also physical pain such as burning sensations in their feet due to alcoholic neuropathy (AN). Is AN a requirement to become an alcoholic too?!

3. Kidney disease

This one sucks because kidney disease not only causes problems within our renal system (obviously), but can also affect other parts including our nerves leading to peripheral neuropathy (PN) which can cause unseen injuries if left unchecked by a medical professionals.

Symptoms:

  • Numbness
  • Tingling
  • Burning Sensation

They say prevention is better than cure (yawn) but when dealing with diseases outside our control we still need proper health care guidance!

So how do we avoid experiencing PN? How about limiting alcohol intake or managing sugar levels more carefully? There has constantly been much research done on using vitamin supplements as part of enhancing patients healthcare routines to combat symptoms/control certain forms periphrall neuropathy.
Speaking of cure, what options do we have?

Treatment:

  • Medications like Anti-seizure drugs or Pain killers
  • Blood tests/nerve conduction studies
  • Physical therapy

Yes may need injection or medication regimen prescribed by healthcare provider, but between you and me, wouldn’t you rather participate in games of kahoot than dealing with a constant burning sensation in your feet all day? #ActionsHaveconsequences folks.

4. Hereditary Factors

Ever heard the expression ‘the apples didn’t fall far from the tree’? The same concept applies to hereditary neuropathies where if a specific gene change runs strong in your family members so does the probability that it can make an appearance to YOU too someday.

5. Trauma

Foot Neuropathy could also be due to trauma such as nutritional deficits (eg low vitamin B) or simply pressure injuries occurring relatively infrequently and causing compression resulting into foot neuropathy! But remember this is just one piece within a larger puzzle.

Ensuring adequate nutrition intake, lifestyle adjustments or appropriate footwear can lead us closer towards preventing / managing these symptoms allowing us better access to taking care of our bod needs because why WOULDN’T we want less needles piercing up through our toes?!

Conclusion

It’s important for individuals everywhere no matter their health situation; diabetic or not(not), alcoholic or sobriety stricken gotta remind ourselves daily health is essential asset towards happy living! From what started out as numbness + tingling sensations on foot can turn into quite more complicated issues over time which hinders decision making capacity in life often!

Understanding how different factors both outside our control(such as genetics) and those under(which lifestyle choices we choose different outlets etc.) contribute allows much increased likely hood management before ailments occur/exacerbate caused by peripheral neuropthy appearing as “unseen wounds”.
